Diamonds in the Dust by Summary

“She’s a pretty wildflower destined for my brother's vase. I'll make her mine, even if how I do it will make flowers wilt.” A DARK FRENCH MAFIA ROMANCE Men like us, we see things. We do things, things that make us unfeeling. That's the price of power and money, of living la belle vie and running the French mafia. Then she came along like a pretty wildflower pushing through the cracks on a dirty pavement - fragile yet resilient, a breath of beauty among the filth. She was supposed to be just another job, a nameless person I was to pluck from her life and hand to my brother, nothing but a pawn in the gamble of our diamond business. There's a psychological label for men like us. We lack empathy and guilt. We do things to have what we want, things that make flowers wilt. Note: Diamonds in the Dust is Book 1 of the Diamonds are Forever trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. The story continues in Diamonds in the Rough (Book 2) and concludes in Diamonds are Forever (Book 3). As many times as a man stabs you in the stomach with betrayal and wrings out your heart with lies. Girls like me, we live. We don't get a choice. We step over the cliff and fall. Eat, sleep, die, and repeat. Note: Diamonds in the Rough is Book 2 of the Diamonds are Forever trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. Diamonds in the Dust (Book 1) must be read first to follow the story. With a Diamond in My Shoe by Jorge J. E. Gracia Summary

The intellectual autobiography of a leading figure in the field of Latin American Philosophy. In 1961, at the age of nineteen, Jorge J. E. Gracia escaped from the island of Cuba by passing himself off as a Catholic seminarian. He arrived in the United States with just a few spare belongings and his mother’s diamond ring secured in a hole in one of his shoes. With a Diamond in My Shoe tells the story of Gracia’s quest for identity—from his early years in Cuba and as a refugee in Miami to his formative role in institutionalizing the field of Latin American philosophy in the US academy. Committed to integrating into Anglo America without forgetting his roots, Gracia reflects on his struggles and successes as an immigrant and academic, bringing a philosopher’s eye to bear on his personal and professional development as a leading Latinx scholar. “Gracia is a writer in full control of his material, and yet someone who in his own search for identity as a philosopher, as a Cuban, as a Cuban American, as a Hispanic, as a Latino, as a Latinx, leaves many questions open, as any good philosopher should, allowing his readers to answer for themselves. The strength of his authorial voice resides in his honesty.” — Rolando Pérez, author of Severo Sarduy and the Neo-Baroque Image of Thought in the Visual Arts

Upon his Uncle Benjamins death in South Africa, and as sole heir to his estate, he becomes the recipient of an intricately carved chest containing thousands of cut and polished diamonds, no mention of which was made in his Will. Why God? Everyone that I saw asked the same questions: Why God? Why has this happened to us? I wondered if we had done something really bad to bring Davids death upon us. I had always prayed to God for him to protect Dan and our children. I asked God to put a protective shield around them everywhere they went and to bring them back safely to me. I believed with all my heart that God would answer my prayers. Three months before Davids accident, I was sitting in the den talking with one of my son-in-laws about what I believed. He said Linda, death is realwe humans dont have any control over it. David was sitting in a recliner listening to us and he said, Mama, hes right; we dont ever know. There was a big game going on in Heaven in honor of Christs birthday. They needed a catcher, so I got the Call, Come on son, come play in our Game today! My dear family and friends remembered when those tears start to fill your eyes; just go outside and look up towards the stars for I will be playing on the Diamond in the sky!

The story behind the classic and universally recognized rhyme! This luminous picture book biography shines a light on the little-known poet and author of the beloved lullaby. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Did you ever wonder who wrote that famous verse? In the days when most girls were brought up to run a home, Jane Taylor had a different kind of education in the English countryside, where she was inspired by nature and the stars, and dreamed of becoming a writer. But in the late 1700s, it was not considered proper for women to be writers. Jane and other female poets were shunned, unable to use their own names when published. But Jane did write, and she never forgot her love for the beauty of nature and the glow of stars, or her desire to write for children. Her published poetry became universally known for generations to come: Twinkle, twinkle little star. This lyrical and luminous biography shines a light on the unsung poet who wrote the words of our most enduring lullaby, and features stunning artwork reflecting the world, the stars, and the story behind the poem that we all know so well.

The Evolution of Economic Ideas and Systems by Geoffrey Schneider Summary

In order to fully understand the evolution and future growth of economic systems, we must draw on the lessons of economic history. The 2008 Financial Crisis, for example, mirrored past economic meltdowns with uncanny accuracy. Just like the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Savings and Loan Crisis of the 1980s, it featured deregulated lenders taking incredible risks with other people’s money. Historical analysis is crucial to understanding trends and patterns that can help us predict the future. This text presents a ground-breaking, pluralistic introduction to economic history and the history of economic thought. Tracing the development of economic systems and economic thought, the text introduces students to the story from ancient times to contemporary capitalism, and also its critics. From the Heart by Rick Worlund Summary

This medley of poetry comes from the heart and a lifetime of observation and that, among other things, is what the world is all about, I suppose, don’t you? But then, shouldn’t it be? Watching and wondering what life holds in store for each of us can be at best, a guessing game, but maybe we hold more of the keys to the final outcome than we can even imagine. With some new ways to look at the possibilities we could conceive a fresh sort of regeneration of humanity that will refurbish what we as a society need. Could this lead us in the right direction? Should we seek provocative new and innovative ideas to cope with the future? I think so. I hope you enjoy some of these thoughts, and if you do, please feel free to share them with friends and relatives if you would like to, whether our futures hold happiness or sad times, success or failure, love, peace, war, and even life-and-death situations, with the proper mind-set and preparation, we should be able to take in stride all that life has to offer. I hope these plain and simple verses will amuse, entertain, console, and even evoke new thoughts within you and challenge you to make the very best in life for yourself and everyone you encounter along the way.

Songs of Kabir by Rabindranath Tagore Summary

The poet Kabór is one of the most interesting personalities in the history of Indian mysticism. A great religious reformer, the founder of a sect to which nearly a million northern Hindus still belong, it is yet supremely as a mystical poet that Kabór lives for us. A beautiful legend tells us that after his death his Mohammedan and Hindu disciples disputed the possession of his body; which the Mohammedans wished to bury, the Hindus to burn. As they argued together, Kabór appeared before them, and told them to lift the shroud and look at that which lay beneath. They did so, and found in the place of the corpse a heap of flowers; half of which were buried by the Mohammedans at Maghar, and half carried by the Hindus to the holy city of Benares to be burned.

From one perspective, we can see ourselves merely as human beings struggling in a crowded and chaotic world of suffering. This book opens our eyes to a different reality, one that turns our familiar world inside out. We need only explore—with curiosity and love—our true potential as human beings in order to discover infinite depth and creativity in our lives as we act and interact in the world. When time and space expand their meaning, we come to know ourselves as having infinite dimensions of being and qualities of spirit, and uncover new mysteries about ourselves, one another, and the reality we live in. This is the last of the five-volume Diamond Heart series of transcribed and edited talks given by A. H. Almaas to inner-work groups in California and Colorado.
