Prayer: The Hidden Fire by Tom Harpur Summary

For over 25 years, journalist, author and commentator Tom Harpur has been thinking, speaking, and writing about religion and spirituality for the mass media and a popular audience. In the process, he has travelled the globe, written 14 books and thousands of articles on everything from life after death and the place of healing in religion to the controversy over who Jesus is and the rational basis for a firm belief in God. In all of this experience, Tom Harpur discovered that one of the central issues for every faith is prayer. Yet, over his time as a parish priest, seminary professor and commentator, Harpur found a distinct gap in the books available on prayer. Simple, practical, and focused on real life, 'Prayer: The Hidden Fire' is the kind of book on prayer Tom Harpur wanted and badly needed many years ago when he first consciously took over his own spiritual journey. This book examines our deep inner need to pray. Harpur encourages readers to go beyond childhood notions of prayer and to develop a personal style of praying and repertoire of prayers that work for them today. Along the way, Tom Harpur shares experiences from his own spiritual journey, and gives readers his most personal work to date.

The Name of this Book Is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch Summary

Read the series that's sold more than 2 million copies--if you dare! Warning: this description has not been authorized by Pseudonymous Bosch. As much as he'd love to sing the praises of his book (he is very vain), he wouldn't want you to hear about his brave 11-year old heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest. Or about how a mysterious box of vials, the Symphony of Smells, sends them on the trail of a magician who has vanished under strange (and stinky) circumstances. And he certainly wouldn't want you to know about the hair-raising adventures that follow and the nefarious villains they face. You see, not only is the name of this book secret, the story inside is, too. For it concerns a secret. A Big Secret.

The Sacred Fire of the Phoenix by Robin Sacredfire Summary

There's a sacred and hidden path inside each one of us, a path of mysteries and amazing manifestations, where nothing is impossible, not even our wildest spiritual creations. This is the realm of impossibilities, where imagination is carried away by a spiritual insight, which is here referred as the phoenix. The allegory inside this book takes us to a subconscious realm, that can lead us to the most uplifting and unknown side of ourselves, but also to other realities as well, namely, the ones that are parallel to ours, and also other dimensions and galaxies. It is with this allegory of the phoenix that we understand the role of the dragons and serpents of our planet, and how they interfere in the Tao of our existence. As a dance of forces, vibrations of different natures, these symbols and concepts take us to the deepest truth within, of who we are and how far can we go. This is a book about the adventures of our soul, the journey within that so many Shamans live to explore. It's also about a path that all spiritualists and gurus have experienced, a path that some have called nirvana, enlightenment or awaking, but few have ever had the ability to fully describe in a way that can be perceived by the common mortal. The Native Americans have often told us about the spirit of the eagle that keeps guard over the spiritual world. This eagle, or big bird, is representative of another living force, which is the phoenix, the bird of fire. This is why many mystics of ancient times believed that only fire could take souls to another world. The fire purifies the body, but the most potent fire comes from within, as an energy that we burn with our conscious awareness. This is the fire that Buddhists, Taoists and Hindus persist in awakening from within, commonly using disciplines created specifically for this purpose, such as yoga, chikung and meditation. This fire represents the power of our own spirituality, which most people are unaware to possess. As mortals and genetically manipulated slaves of a few alien species, we've lost the physical capability to ignite it. But the phoenix can help us reach it, through the spiritual nature that is within each one of us. The one who can ride the phoenix, can travel very far, to amazing lands. And these are the ones that often come back, when they choose to, as our prophets and religious leaders. This book describes their journey to Valhalla, Heaven, Paradise, or more simply, the Laboratory of God.

Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker Summary

OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NATIONAL BESTSELLER The heartrending story of a mid-century American family with twelve children, six of them diagnosed with schizophrenia, that became science's great hope in the quest to understand--even cure--the disease. Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the dream. After World War II, Don's work with the US Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their twelve children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years there was an established script for a family like the Galvins--aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony--and they worked hard to play their parts. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the ten Galvin boys were diagnosed as schizophrenic. How could all this happen in one family? What took place inside the house on Hidden Valley Road was so extraordinary that the Galvins became one of the first families to be studied by the National Institutes of Mental Health. Their shocking story also offers a shadow history of the science of schizophrenia, from the era of institutionalization, lobotomy and the premise of the schizophrenogenic mother, to the search for genetic markers for the disease, always amidst profound disagreements about the nature of the illness itself. Unknown to the Galvins, samples of their DNA informed decades of genetic research that continues today, offering paths to treatment and even the possibility of the eradication of the disease for future generations. With clarity and compassion, bestselling and award-winning author Robert Kolker uncovers one family's unforgettable legacy of suffering, love and hope.

“An intoxicating fusion of fantasy and historical fiction. . . . Wecker’s storytelling skills dazzle." —Entertainment Weekly A marvelous and absorbing debut novel about a chance meeting between two supernatural creatures in turn-of-the-century immigrant New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay by a disgraced rabbi knowledgeable in the ways of dark Kabbalistic magic. She serves as the wife to a Polish merchant who dies at sea on the voyage to America. As the ship arrives in New York in 1899, Chava is unmoored and adrift until a rabbi on the Lower East Side recognizes her for the creature she is and takes her in. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert and trapped centuries ago in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard. Released by a Syrian tinsmith in a Manhattan shop, Ahmad appears in human form but is still not free. An iron band around his wrist binds him to the wizard and to the physical world. Chava and Ahmad meet accidentally and become friends and soul mates despite their opposing natures. But when the golem’s violent nature overtakes her one evening, their bond is challenged. An even more powerful threat will emerge, however, and bring Chava and Ahmad together again, challenging their very existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice. Compulsively readable, The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, in a wondrously inventive tale that is mesmerizing and unforgettable.

The Occult Imagination in Britain, 1875-1947 by Christine Ferguson,Andrew Radford Summary

Between 1875 and 1947, a period bookended, respectively, by the founding of the Theosophical Society and the death of notorious occultist celebrity Aleister Crowley, Britain experienced an unparalleled efflorescence of engagement with unusual occult schema and supernatural phenomena such as astral travel, ritual magic, and reincarnationism. Reflecting the signal array of responses by authors, artists, actors, impresarios and popular entertainers to questions of esoteric spirituality and belief, this interdisciplinary collection demonstrates the enormous interest in the occult during a time typically associated with the rise of secularization and scientific innovation. The contributors describe how the occult realm functions as a turbulent conceptual and affective space, shifting between poles of faith and doubt, the sacrosanct and the profane, the endemic and the exotic, the forensic and the fetishistic. Here, occultism emerges as a practice and epistemology that decisively shapes the literary enterprises of writers such as Dion Fortune and Arthur Machen, artists such as Pamela Colman Smith, and revivalists such as Rolf Gardiner

Break the Alabaster Box stresses the missing nectar of life--the Holy Spirit--in our personal lives. The author teaches of unction with all force and clarity. Pedro Patrick offers to the hearts of readers an explanation of what unction is all about. The unction that he receives provides the framework for the action of this book. Rumi by Rumi Summary

A collection of never-before-translated poems by the widely beloved medieval Persian poet Rumi. Rumi (1207-1273) was trained in Sufism--a mystic tradition within Islam--and founded the Sufi order known to us as the Whirling Dervishes, who use dance and music as part of their spiritual devotion. Rumi's poetry has long been popular with contemporary Western audiences because of the way it combines the sacred and the sensual, describing divine love in rapturously human terms. However, a number of Rumi's English translators over the past century were not speakers of Persian and they based their sometimes very free interpretations on earlier translations. With Western audiences in mind, translators also tended to tone down or leave out elements of Persian culture and of Islam in Rumi's work, and hundreds of the prolific poet's works were never made available to English speakers at all. In this new translation -- composed almost entirely of untranslated gems from Rumi's vast ouevre -- Brad Gooch and Maryam Mortaz aim to achieve greater fidelity to the originals while still allowing Rumi's lyric exuberance to shine.

Old English Elegies by Anne L. Klinck Summary

The nine elegies have all been edited separately between 1933 and 1983. Klinck builds on the extensive previous scholarship in the field and also draws on recently available materials - notably the microfiche Concordances, the first letters of the new Old English Dictionary, and Bruce Mitchell's Old English Syntax - to make new suggestions about problematic words and passages. Going beyond an exploration of the literary potential of individual poems, Klinck examines them as separate manifestations of a common generic impulse: she moves from palaeographical and philological detail to broader literary and cultural considerations and, finally, to a definition of Old English elegy.

Harvey's Views on the Use of the Circulation of the Blood by John G. Curtis Summary

Example in this ebook CHAPTER I HARVEY'S ATTITUDE TOWARD THE QUESTION OF THE USE OF THE CIRCULATION It is a happy moment for a physiologist when the train which is bearing him across the luxuriant plain of Venetia stops at the cry of "Padova!" If he have not informed himself too thoroughly about the sights which he will see at the Paduan University, he will enjoy his own surprise when he is ushered into the Anatomical Theater of Fabricius ab Aquapendente—a room in which standing-places rise steeply, tier above tier, entirely around a small central oval pit. Looking down into this, as he leans upon the rail, the traveler will realize with sudden pleasure that William Harvey, when a medical student, may often have leaned upon the self-same rail to see Fabricius demonstrate the anatomy of man. The place looks fit to have been a nursery of object-teachers, for it is too small to hold a pompous cathedra; and the veteran to whose Latin the young Englishman listened must have stood directly beside the dead body. To an American, musing there alone, the closing years of the sixteenth century, the last years of Queen Elizabeth of England, which seem so remote to him when at home, are but as yesterday. Recent, indeed, in the history of medicine is the year 1602, when Harvey received his doctor's degree at Padua and returned to London; but for all that we are right in feeling that our day is far removed from his. The tireless progress of modern times has swept on at the charging pace; but in Harvey's time books were still a living force which had been written in days five and six times as far removed from the student of Padua as he from us. Galen, the Greek who practised medicine at imperial Rome in the second century of the Christian era; Aristotle, who had been the tutor of Alexander the Great five hundred years before Galen, when Rome was but a petty state warring with her Italian neighbors;—these ancients were still great working authorities in Harvey's day. It is against this persistent glow of the Greek thought that Harvey stands out so vividly as the first great modern figure in physiology. But it rather heightens than lowers his achievement that it was by the ancient glow that he saw his way forward, admiring the past, but not dazzled by it. In his old age he bade a young student "goe to the fountain head and read Aristotle, Cicero, Avicenna"; and in talk with the same youth Harvey called the moderns by a name so roughly contemptuous that it will not bear repeating. Yet in his old age, in the very act of extolling the ancients, he wrote as follows:— "But while we acquiesce in their discoveries, and believe, such is our sloth, that nothing further can be found out, the lively acuteness of our genius languishes and we put out the torch which they have handed on to us." The Fires by Joe Flood Summary

New York City, 1968. The RAND Corporation had presented an alluring proposal to a city on the brink of economic collapse: Using RAND's computer models, which had been successfully implemented in high-level military operations, the city could save millions of dollars by establishing more efficient public services. The RAND boys were the best and brightest, and bore all the sheen of modern American success. New York City, on the other hand, seemed old-fashioned, insular, and corrupt-and the new mayor was eager for outside help, especially something as innovative and infallible as "computer modeling." A deal was struck: RAND would begin its first major civilian effort with the FDNY. Over the next decade-a time New York City firefighters would refer to as "The War Years"-a series of fires swept through the South Bronx, the Lower East Side, Harlem, and Brooklyn, gutting whole neighborhoods, killing more than two thousand people and displacing hundreds of thousands. Conventional wisdom would blame arson, but these fires were the result of something altogether different: the intentional withdrawal of fire protection from the city's poorest neighborhoods-all based on RAND's computer modeling systems. Despite the disastrous consequences, New York City in the 1970s set the template for how a modern city functions-both literally, as RAND sold its computer models to cities across the country, and systematically, as a new wave of technocratic decision-making took hold, which persists to this day. In The Fires, Joe Flood provides an X-ray of these inner workings, using the dramatic story of a pair of mayors, an ambitious fire commissioner, and an even more ambitious think tank to illuminate the patterns and formulas that are now inextricably woven into the very fabric of contemporary urban life. The Fires is a must read for anyone curious about how a modern city works.

The City of God, Volume II by Bishop of Hippo Saint Augustine Summary

The City of God, Volume II Bishop of Hippo Saint Augustine - "The glorious city of God is my theme in this work; which you; my dearest son Marcellinus; suggested; and which is due to you by my promise. I have undertaken its defence against those who prefer their own gods to the Founder of this city;a city surpassingly glorious; whether we view it as it still lives by faith in this fleeting course of time; and sojourns as a stranger in the midst of the ungodly; or as it shall dwell in the fixed stability of its eternal seat; which it now with patience waits for; expecting until "righteousness shall return unto judgment;" and it obtain; by virtue of its excellence; final victory and perfect peace. A great work this; and an arduous; but God is my helper." -an excerpt
