God's Word Is a Lamp to My Feet and a Light to My Path by N. Joan Weikert Summary

This is a book of devotions, which were written to encourage people. They were written by Joan from her experiences of how to let go of negative thoughts and how to let God be the guide in her life. Being a Sunday School teacher gave the opportunity to learn much about the Bible. Joan didn't have the privilege of going to college, but went through many of God's "schools of knowledge." Psalm 139 has become Joan's favorite chapter in the Bible. It tells how well God knows each of us, how great and powerful he is, and the fact that God created each of us just how he wanted us to be. Therefore, no one should hate who they are; they are made in God's image. Joan's prayer for everyone who reads this book is for them to grow into a closer relationship with our loving Maker.

A Light for the Pathway by David Atkinson Summary

What did the Psalmists of Israel believe? How did they practice their religion? What impact did their faith in God have on the way they handled the struggles and uncertainties of life? How does this speak to us today? This book explores some themes which underlie the faith of the psalmists: for example, covenant, creation, law, justice, humanity, suffering, lament, restoration, and pilgrimage. Holding these together is the overarching theme of God's steadfast love throughout their history. The psalms are prayers and praises, often used in temple worship, some intimate and personal, many corporate and full of thanksgiving. Some are celebrations of the kingly rule of God over all creation. How do we Christians today approach this ancient hymn book, which is full of poetic imagination and deep spirituality? How can it help our own journeys on our pathways of faith and hope? This side of the life and death and resurrection of Jesus, can we hear in the psalms words of comfort for our struggles of faith, as well as joy in our worship, in today's confusing world?

A Light Unto My Path by James J. Bacik,Kevin E. Anderson Summary

There are many books available on creating a good effective homily. This book, unique in that it is the product of a long-standing dialogue between James Bacik, a pastor and theologian, and Kevin Anderson, a clinical psychologist and author, offers those who preach theological perspectives and practical advice on proclaiming the word of God. The authors move through the process of preparing and delivering a homily from its conception to delivery. However, they emphasize the focus and function of the homily rather than the theme, and how this relates the message of the readings to the human or social concerns of the congregation. Here is a one-of-a-kind book that includes empirical data in the form of a survey to explore what works and does not work in preaching. It will provide a fresh perspective to those in homiletics courses in seminaries as well as hands-on advice for those who already preach.

Holy Scriptures, Tree of Life Version (TLV) by Messianic Jewish Family Bible Society Summary

A New Translation to Highlight the Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith The first Christians were Jews, and Christianity has its roots in the religion of God's chosen and called out people. Jesus's death and resurrection was not the beginning of a new religion but the fulfillment of the covenant God made with his people. Yet most Bible translations sacrifice the deep connection between the Jewish roots of our faith and the grafted-in Gentile branches, using imprecise English terms rather than Hebrew terms that encompass a fuller meaning. The Tree of Life Version (TLV) is a new Bible translation, produced by the Messianic Jewish Family Bible Society, which highlights the rich Hebrew roots of the Christian faith by restoring: · the Jewish order of the books of the Old Testament · the Jewish name of the Messiah, Yeshua · reverence for the four-letter unspoken name of God · Hebrew transliterated terms, such as shalom, shofar, and shabbat · and more

Awe and exhiliration--along with heartbreak and mordant wit--abound in Lolita, Nabokov's most famous and controversial novel, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America. Most of all, it is a meditation on love--love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation.

Read Daily Light online at http://www.esvbible.org/devotions/daily-light. As a child Samuel Bagster learned the precepts and practices of a devoted Christian, which sustained him throughout his life and which, in turn, he passed on to his children. This highly principled and religiously minded bookshop owner gathered his large family together daily for reading God's Word, testing their knowledge by connecting the day's verses with other passages, and praying over how it could be applied. It was from this practice of worship that the Bagster family compiled the material for Daily Light on the Daily Path. It is said that this daily devotional book is the most popular of all time. It has touched hundreds of thousands of Christians to the remotest corners of the world with the biblical message of comfort and help. Originally printed in the 1800s, this work is timeless because each reading is a connection of Scripture verses centered around a theme. Crossway is delighted to re-release this classic book in the beautiful and clear language of the English Standard Version.

Pilgrimage by Lynn Austin Summary

We all encounter times when our spirit feels dry, when doubt looms. The opportunity to tour Israel came at a good time. For months, my life has been a mindless plodding through necessary routine, as monotonous as an all-night shift on an assembly line. Life gets that way sometimes, when nothing specific is wrong but the world around us seems drained of color. Even my weekly worship experiences and daily quiet times with God have felt as dry and stale as last year's crackers. I'm ashamed to confess the malaise I've felt. I have been given so much. Shouldn't a Christian's life be an abundant one, as exciting as Christmas morning, as joyful as Easter Sunday? With gripping honesty, Lynn Austin pens her struggles with spiritual dryness in a season of loss and unwanted change. Tracing her travels throughout Israel, Austin seamlessly weaves events and insights from the Word . . . and in doing so finds a renewed passion for prayer and encouragement for her spirit, now full of life and hope.

More Light from the Book by George D. Johnson Summary

Book Summary More Light From The Book is a sequel to reverend George Johnsons first publication Light From The Book that expounds on the scriptures that clearly demonstrate clean and honest living before our Lord. More Light From The Book helps Christians discover the secret to maintaining strength and faith in the word of God when we are in the midst of any battle, whether it is failing health, unpleasant people, or the lack of financial resources. The answers to anyones problems can be found in the number of scriptures from which Reverend Johnson elucidates his themes. More Light From The Book is a verse-by-verse study of various scriptures from the Bible that can be used as an excellent tool for home Bible study with family and friends. The Bible teaches us that Christians must live one day at a time, be doers of Gods word, and live by faith, which equips Christians with the knowledge that faith in Gods blessings to us is a way of life. In this powerful book, Reverend Johnson reveals through the scriptures that by taking one day at a time, we can reduce stress, worry, and anxiety in our lives when we rely on the unchanging word of God to provide our every need on a daily basis. When individuals take one day at a time, they will not have to worry about their daily sustenance. Christians need to consider repotting for growth; as Sarah Ban Bratnach explains: When we cant visualize or dream. When we cant remember the last time we laughed. When we have absolutely nothing in the next twenty-four hours to look forward to. When this happens, week in, and week out, we need to realize that were pot-bound. We need to gently loosen the soil around our souls, and find something that brings a smile or a giddy lilt to our lives. For this reason, More Light From the Book gives us roots and room to grow. Reverend Johnsons abundant offering of scriptures can help Christians root, bud, and bear silent witness to a revitalized spirit.

Daily Light on the Daily Path by Various Authors Summary

This is probably the most widely read collection of daily readings from the Bible ever published, and it is presented in this edition in the words of The New International Version (North American Edition). For three generations, Daily Light on the Daily Path has been a classic religious work, and it has gone through a countless number of printings. It was compiled by the descendants of the London bookseller, Samuel Bagster. Bagster's grandson, Robert, who died in 1924, wrote of the origins of this book, "Daily Light on the Daily Path was prepared entirely within the family. Few are able to appreciate the heart-searching care with which every text was selected, the days, nay the weeks of changes, alterations and improvements, until at last each page was passed to the printer." Here are two selections of Bible readings for every day in the year -- for Morning and Evening.

Worry and Anxiety by Archibong EmmanuelEtim Summary

Worry and Anxiety; one of the greatest distorting substances in the world today, distorting the joy and happiness of people living in the world on daily basis with its stingy influences. So great is its influences in the life of the people that like a real monster which put the human to flight at either its presence or at the moment of the mentioning of its name, so also has its existence become in the life of the people. In fact, so great is its worth in the life of the people living in our world today that it seems like it is becoming one of the idolize things to them, that is defining their mood at every moment of the time, like their eating moment and their refraining moment from eating, their moment being happy and going out to caught fun with pals, and their moment of being solitary from all etc. In fact, so great has its influences become in the life of the people in our world today that even some people has really idolize in their life. Yes, this is very true. I once met a pal and also a PhD holder lecturer who once told me that one of the ways by which one can take to obtain success in this life is through the one learning to live a life of worrying and being anxious of life's process on daily basis. In fact, like an unsurmountable and unconquerable real monster to the human so also has this substance of things called worry and anxiety being in our world. For despite the great measure layout by many scholars around the world on how to eradicate its existence in the life of the people, all seems to be to no avail. From our environment to off our environment (the social media world) what we see and hear is of the hurtful effects this monster is creating in the life of the people on daily basis (many people in our world today live in depression, dejection, despondency of life, and some have committed suicide all because of them being worried and anxious of one thing or the other etc.) Howbeit, with an undisputability of its might over the humans because of the harbour its existence has created in their life, this monster of the world ought not to have an influence over the Christians. This is because Jesus Christ their mighty leader has proclaimed himself having preeminence over all things, both of physical and those of the spiritual through his resurrection from the death, and then sitting on a throne raised beyond every existing thrones under the heaven. Also, he has promised and also proclaimed giving this victory of his to all who believe on him (John1:12, Luke 10:19). But it is bizarre that despite this great Promises made by the Lord to his believers we still find that this monster of the world is still having preeminence over the believers as though they do not have a saviour to save them from it, there by making them to be of no differences between the people of the world and they who are called the children of God, for as the former so also is the latter (both control by this great monster who defines their mood of living life on daily basis). And this is making the word of the Lord to seem falsehood to his believers like he is just seeking to get followers from them. Howbeit, from his holy book (the Bible) it is affirmed that every word of his is true and there is no lie attached to it (Proverbs30:5), there by expressing that the proclamation of his to his believers of giving them victory over all things because they do believe on him isn't a falsehood statement to them for him to just get followers from them. The question then rises, why then does this monster of the world also having preeminence over the believers life if the Promises of the Lord to them isn't a falsehood proclamation, and how can it be overcome in their life? This is what this book is all about, to educate the Christians on how and why they should overcome the monster of the world called worry and anxiety in their life as they continue believing in the Lord.

How Are You, Really? by Jenna Kutcher Summary

Forget hustle harder. Forget a mandatory 5 a.m. wake-up. Forget outlining your life plan in six-month, one-year, and five-year spans. We're living in a cultural shift as we reframe our perspectives around the purpose of work, what work/life balance really means, and how we want to spend our time on this planet. In her first book, Jenna Kutcher—entrepreneur, photographer, influencer, teacher, mom, and host of the wildly popular Goal Digger podcast—shares her philosophy on how to live a life that exists outside the tired cliché of “having it all.” How Are You, Really? is about taking a moment to soak up the richness of our experiences and creating a life that makes room for more actual living. When Jenna Kutcher was 23, she left her corporate job, bought a camera on Craigslist for $300, and started her own business as a wedding photographer. From that single investment in herself, she built a successful company, a thriving podcast, and a beautiful brand. But her driving force has never been about working harder/smarter/faster/better. What Jenna Kutcher embraces is the simple notion that we, women especially, crave lives of fulfillment. Divided into three sections, How Are You, Really? is a guide to creating such a life. In Part One: Who You Are, Jenna uses stories from her childhood, some career false starts, her marriage and path to motherhood, and more to show how to crystallize your sense of your own identity. Because how can you know what you really, truly want out of your future if you don’t see yourself clearly in the present? In Part Two: Who You Have, and Who Has You, Jenna shows the benefits of a support system, how mentorship and kindness can come in surprising ways and from surprising sources, and how to build your own authentic community. In Part Three: What You’re Going to Do About It, Jenna guides you through illustrations from her career on how to turn your deepest dream into a life that brings success, joy, and—most importantly--the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. We all want, simply put, a life well-lived. So, ask yourself the question you’ve been avoiding. How are you, really? It’s time to find your answer, and start living.

The Sermon on the Mount in the Light of the Temple by John W. Welch Summary

No religious text has influenced the world more than has the New Testament's Sermon on the Mount, and yet this crucial text still begs to be more clearly understood. Why was it written? What unifying theme or purpose holds it all together? Should it be called a sermon? Or is it some other kind of composition? How would its earliest listeners have heard its encoded allusions and systematic program? This book offers new insights into the Sermon on the Mount by seeing it in the shadow of the all-pervasive Temple in Jerusalem, which dominated the religious landscape of the world of Jesus and his earliest disciples. Analyzing Matthew 5-7 in light of biblical and Jewish backgrounds, ritual studies, and oral performances in early Christian worship, this reading coherently integrates every line in the Sermon. It positions the Sermon as the premier Christian mystery.

From the Darkness to the Light by Paul Kwame Kyei Summary

My journey in this life began in a small village in Ghana, in West Africa. My father was a fetish priest, a practitioner of our traditional religion. As a boy, I became a Christian, the first in my family to do so. I served in the Methodist Church for many years, and I was known there as a fiery preacher. Then I found the ascended masters, the great souls of East and West, from all races and religions, who have returned to God in the ritual of the ascension. Elizabeth Clare Prophet, their messenger, became my mentor and teacher. I have followed the path of the masters and their teachings for nearly forty years. In those years I have witnessed miracles and passed through many tests and challenges. I have seen black magic and witchcraft and felt their effects. I have seen how the Light overcomes the Darkness. Through it all, the masters have never left me. This is the story of my journey. My hope is that what I have written may shed some light on the path for those who follow.

Finding Joy on the Mountain Climb by Lori Arnold-Grine, PhD Summary

Living with chronic illness can make life seem like a steep mountain climb. How do you find the strength to climb on and face each day with pain and suffering? Finding Joy on the Mountain Climb is a story of encouragement and hope, enriched with scripture and prayer. Written during a chronic illness battle, Arnold-Grine shares how a deep personal relationship with God helped her take One Step at a Time. She also includes 40 days of inspirational devotions from her health blog to help find purpose, peace and comfort in the battle. Discover how God will carry you through a struggle and equip you for the climb in her testimony: Every day with chronic illness I must take up my cross and follow where God leads me up this mountain. My hand is in His - the only way I want to travel this difficult journey. It has brought me to a deeper relationship with God, and through it I wish to share my story of hope and offer encouragement to others. The focus is not on the mountain climb, but on the Lord getting me to the “summit” to praise Him and finding joy in the journey by leaning heavily on Him. Inspired by Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God,” I take one step at a time with Him. It is within the battle that we find ourselves committed to what matters most. As I lean not on my own understanding, God offers peace and light to pave my pathway. He gives strength for the journey and carries me. Give me Jesus for the journey, and as I walk closely with Him, may He bless others through me. It is my prayer that this story encourages others to praise God on the mountain climb.

Evidence from Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ by William Miller Summary

In presenting these Lectures to the public, the writer is only complying with the solicitations of some of his friends, who have requested that his views on the Prophecies of Daniel and John might be made public. The reader is therefore requested to give the subject a careful and candid perusal, and compare every part with the standard of Divine Truth; for if the explanation the writer has given to the scriptures under consideration should prove correct, the reader will readily perceive that it concerns us all, and becomes doubly important to us, because we live on the eve of one of the most important events ever revealed to man by the wisdom of God--the judgment of the great day.

In His Love and Glorious Service by Charlie Lusco Summary

The In His Love and Glorious Service trilogy will help guide you every day with a new message of love, encouragement, truth, wisdom, personal testimony, poetry, life messages and down -to-earth examples from lives I have encountered. I believe that we are called in our lives to serve God through loving our families, friends, co-workers, neighbors and all of those around us (even our enemies)! We are also all on a journey in life to either live for ourselves or for others. God demands humility and devotion, but also understands that we need to be strong, and these daily messages will help you, my beloved, to look to Him and gain that strength, that wisdom, and that love which only He can provide. These daily devotions will also help you recognize how to serve Him through His faithfulness, and His eternal and unconditional love for you - His child. These devotions are not ordinary short bits of commentary. This journey is split into three books of four months each. Each devotional will bring you God's heart through this unworthy yet willing vessel. Each days message will bring you God's Word, thoughts and visions, and a poem about that particular topic. These three "Seasons of Service" will help you stay on track each day, and encourage you to stay focused on your journey with Jesus. It is my fervent hope that you open up your heart each day to God, and allow your spirit to join with His Holy Spirit, as you walk through each season and feel His presence in your life. Feel the freedom to become one with Him and learn to walk in His love and glorious service.

Prayers and Other Pieces of Thomas Becon by Thomas Becon Summary

The Parker Society was the London-based Anglican society that printed in fifty-four volumes the works of the leading English Reformers of the sixteenth century. It was formed in 1840 and disbanded in 1855 when its work was completed. Named after Matthew Parker -- the first Elizabethan Archbishop of Canterbury, who was known as a great collector of books -- the stimulus for the foundation of the society was provided by the Tractarian movement, led by John Henry Newman and Edward B. Pusey. Some members of this movement spoke disparagingly of the English Reformation, and so some members of the Church of England felt the need to make available in an attractive form the works of the leaders of that Reformation.

Dictionary of Biblical Imagery by Leland Ryken,James C. Wilhoit,Tremper Longman III Summary

A Christianity Today 1999 Book of the Year! Every reader of the Bible has encountered the powerful, comforting and sometimes puzzling imagery of Scripture. These concrete pictures with their hidden force have struck sharp and lasting impressions on our minds. Their imprint has etched itself on the language and grammar of Christian faith and Western culture. Why then do traditional Bible dictionaries and reference works offer so little help to explorers of the Bible's galaxy of verbal pictures? They excel in describing the climate, borders and location of Galilee or Sinai. But they are often blind to the artistic expressions and deaf to the musical meanings that echo from within the world of the biblical text. The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is the first contemporary reference work dedicated to exploring the images, symbols, motifs, metaphors and literary patterns found in the Bible. More than that, it examines the Bible's universal archetypes or master images--including the plot motifs and character types that recur throughout life, literature and the Bible. This unique dictionary explores the dazzling variety in which the Word of God comes dressed in clothes of everyday life. It traces the trail of images from Eden to the New Jerusalem. It captures the plotted patterns of biblical narrative. It surveys the imaged texture of each book of the Bible. In short, The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is an inviting, enlightening and indispensable companion to the reading, study, contemplation and enjoyment of the Bible.
