A Touch of Drama by Summary

Archie Wayne, successful playwright, could not say what impulse had made him return to the small town of his boyhood. On impulse, he called on his boyhood friend, and the matter would have ended there had he not met and fallen for his friend's daughter, the young and innocent Christine. Their brief idyll is interrupted by a police enquiry: Archie's wife Irma is missing, leaving behind a disquieting message, and he finds himself suspect number one in a possible murder case. But Archie is convinced that Irma is alive and trying to ruin him - and tragedy and violence will take their toll on both the guilty and innocent in the search for the truth.

Islands in the Net by Bruce Sterling Summary

In a near-future new age of corporate control, hacker mercenaries, and electronic terrorism, a public relations executive on the rise finds herself caught in the violent epicenter of a data war Two decades into the twenty-first century, the world’s nations are becoming irrelevant. Corporations are the true global powers, with information the most valuable currency, while the smaller island nations have become sanctuaries for data pirates and terrorists. A globe-trotting PR executive for the large corporate economic democracy Rizome Industries Group, Laura Webster is present when a foreign representative is assassinated on Rizome soil during a conference for offshore data havens. Dispatched immediately on an international mission of diplomacy, Laura hopes she can make a difference in a volatile, unsteady world, but instead finds herself trapped on the front lines of rapidly escalating third-world hostilities and caught up in an inescapable net of conspiracy, terrorism, post-millennial voodoo, and electronic warfare. During the 1980s, science fiction luminary Bruce Sterling envisioned the future . . . and hit it almost dead-on. The author who, along with William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, and Rudy Rucker, helped create and define the cyberpunk subgenre imagines a world of tomorrow in Islands in the Net that bears a striking—and disturbing—resemblance to our present-day information-age reality. Nominated for the Hugo and Locus Awards and winner of the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, Sterling’s extraordinary novel is a gripping, eye-opening, and remarkably prescient science fiction classic.

An Adventure that Spans Time and the Sea from the South Coast of Maine to the Lands Behind the Northern Lights Sim Spotswood decides not to keep his after school appointment with Dr. McCreedy to get his teeth straightened. Instead he wanders to the clam flats where Lost River meets the sea and where a Viking ship, unearthed from the silt of a thousand years, sits like the skeleton of a dragon in its cofferdam. Sim discovers buried in the sand, a small medallion the size of a half dollar. That he should be the one to find it is no accident. At least Dr. Asneath Plever of the Smithsonian doesn't think so. Nor does Winifred Hazel Chit, the Witch of thunderhead Cliff who has waited one hundred and eleven years for Sim to undertake the adventure that now unfolds. As more of the medallions appear Sim encounters other searchers including Splitface and Gold-Tipped-Smith who know the power of the Starlight Medallions and want them for themselves. Sim, who has never known his father, lies at night on the widows walk of his home with his dog, Walter, watching the celestial canopy, waiting for a shooting star upon which he can make his wish, the same wish he has made every night for a long as he has known the words of the wishing verse. Now as he travels with the Starlight Medallions to places where no one has gone before, it seems that wish may come true.

Mapping Postcommunist Cultures

FileSize: 1979kb
File Format: Pdf

Mapping Postcommunist Cultures by Vitaly Chernetsky Summary

In Mapping Postcommunist Cultures Chernetsky argues that Russia and Ukraine exemplify the principal paradigms of post-Soviet cultural development. In Russia this has manifested itself in the subversive dismantling of the totalitarian linguistic regime and the foregrounding of previously marginalized subject positions. In Ukraine, work in these areas shows how the traumas of centuries of colonial oppression are being overcome through the carnivalesque decrowning of ideological dogmas and an affirmation of a new type of community, most recently demonstrated in the peaceful Orange Revolution of 2004. Mapping Postcommunist Cultures also critiques the neglect of the former communist world in current models of cultural globalization.

My Life Is Chaos in Theory by Marceline Silvia Rose Summary

This is the story of my life - as a teenager, anyway. Think of this as me time-traveling back to my high school days, only if it were filmed as a documentary and I was narrating it as an adult. It's a story about the struggles, tribulations, and trials that stood in my way and how years after the fact I'm still alive today. Even though my mental health may not be at its best, nor has it been, this is for those who want something to relate to. A story about life. A little four year adventure in my life so you know that even if life has beaten you into the dirt, you matter. You know why? I'm still kicking and screaming, letting life (and its manager) I'll burn its house down with the lemons if it gives me any more of them. It's told through the eyes of my young adult self, looking back and telling it like it is. I know many people, young and old, who struggle with mental health and might be afraid to speak up about it. There's a stigma that surrounds it, a hatred for those who suffer, and some who fake it for attention. If you're one of those people who are struggling, this is for you. Everyone who lays low, all the ones who feel small, and insignificant. Here's my story.Enjoy.Sincerely, - Me

Shakespeare's texts are seen by the poet and critic Michael Goldman as designs for theatrical experience—the complex emotional, physical, and intellectual transaction between actor and audience that brings alive Shakespeare's imagination and makes it immediate to our own. Mr. Goldman's particular concerns are these: what the audience responds to in an acted play; how Shakespeare controls and shapes this response; what the response means, and why it matters. Drama High: Second Chance by L. Divine Summary

Back for another dose of high drama, Compton's sassiest, Jayd Jackson, is about to discover it really is a different world when she starts dating South Bay High's finest white boy. . . All Jayd Jackson wants is a drama-free year at South Bay High, a.k.a. Drama High. But it doesn't seem she's going to get it. It's only the second week of Junior year and already, Misty, her nemesis, has almost gotten her killed after instigating a fight between Jayd and KJ's girlfriend, Trecee. But it goes with the territory. She's a fire child, and granddaughter to Lynne Mae Williams—Mama—and Mama says that means the drama will follow Jayd wherever she goes. Even so, Jayd just wants to chill, still hoping Junior year can carry on, drama-free. And with Misty and KJ reportedly "hanging," Jayd is ready to move on. But the brother won't stop blowing up Jayd's cellie, and the text-messages keep coming; and the message is clear: KJ wants Jayd back bad. But Jayd couldn't care less. She's got a new man to kick-it with now—a half-Jewish white boy from Palos Verdes whose parents are loaded with a capital "L." And Jeremy Weiner's no ordinary white boy—he listens to East Coast rap, he's got a sweet ride, and he's got it bad for Jayd Jackson. But no one at South Bay High will just let a sistah be happy. Misty's back to her usual foolishness, KJ's all over her jock, and the notoriously anti-black teacher Mrs. Bennett is tripping. Jeremy's got her totally sprung, but she's going to have to rely on her brains—and some of Mama's magic, of course—if she's going to survive another week at Drama High. L. Divine is at the top of her game in this superb follow-up to the power-packed Drama High: The Fight. Look for the next juicy installment, Jayd's Legacy, coming soon.

Movie Nights with the Reagans

Movie Nights with the Reagans Pdf/ePub eBook Author: Mark Weinberg
Editor: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1501134019
FileSize: 1887kb
File Format: Pdf
Read: 1887

Movie Nights with the Reagans by Mark Weinberg Summary

The former special advisor and press secretary to President Ronald Reagan shares a “sentimental but often revealing…enjoyable walk down Memory Lane” (Kirkus Reviews)—told through the movies he watched with the Reagans every week at Camp David. Over the course of eight years, Mark Weinberg travelled to Camp David with Ronald and Nancy Reagan as they screened movies on Friday and Saturday nights. They watched movies in times of triumph, such as the aftermath of Reagan’s 1984 landslide, and after moments of tragedy, such as the explosion of the Challenger and the shooting of the President and Press Secretary Jim Brady. Weinberg’s unparalleled access offers a rare glimpse of the Reagans—unscripted, relaxed, unburdened by the world, with no cameras in sight. Each chapter discusses a legendary film, what the Reagans thought of it, and provides warm anecdotes and untold stories about his family and the administration. From Reagan’s pranks on the Secret Service to his thoughts on the parallels between Hollywood and Washington, Weinberg paints a full picture of the president The New Yorker once famously dubbed “The Unknowable.” A “meander through a simpler time capturing a different time and a different president” (USA TODAY), Movie Nights with the Reagans is a nostalgic journey through the 1980s and its most iconic films, seen through the eyes of one of Hollywood’s former stars: one who was simultaneously transforming the Republican Party, the American economy, and the course of the Cold War. “For those equally enthused about movies and the fortieth president, this book will serve as a welcome change from today’s political climate” (Publishers Weekly).

A fighter leads his band of virtual warriors, thieves, and wizards across a deadly computer-generated landscape, but does he have what it takes to be a hero? . . . A company outsources grief for profit, its slogan: “Don’t feel like having a bad day? Let someone else have it for you.” Drawing from both pop culture and science, Charles Yu is a brilliant observer of contemporary society, and in Sorry Please Thank You he fills his stories with equal parts laugh-out-loud humor and piercing insight into the human condition. He has already garnered comparisons to such masters as Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams, and in this new collection we have resounding proof that he has arrived (via a wormhole in space-time) as a major new voice in American fiction.

Location portraiture offers many advantages. The backgrounds are varied, the surroundings can tell a story about the client, and the setting can help tell the subject’s story. Working on location presents unique challenges, however. Often, the photographer is working in an unfamiliar place in which the lighting is not ideal for portraiture. Light is the very backbone of a good portrait, so the need to manage and modify the light becomes a top priority in the portrait session. The Dachowskis teach you how to harness the light in any scenario—from direct sun, to window light, to fluorescent light, to household lamp light, and even mixed-lighting scenarios—to create correct exposures and believable image color. You’ll learn to restrict and enhance the light, add dramatic highlights and shadows to create dimension, and set the mood in the portrait. With these tips, you’ll learn to handle location portrait challenges with ease and confidence.

The Gates Ajar by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Summary

For the first time in Penguin Classics, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps's bestselling Civil War classic Elizabeth Stuart Phelps's 1868 Reconstruction-era novel The Gates Ajar, in its portrait of inconsolable grief following the American Civil War, helped to shape enduring American ideas about heaven and demonstrated that for American women, the war didn't simply end at Appomattox. When Mary Cabot loses her beloved brother, Union soldier Royal, in the war, she feels as though she will never feel peace again until the arrival of her widowed aunt Winifred. Sharing the wisdom that has comforted her through her grief, Winifred offers Mary a groundbreaking view of the afterlife: a place of loving reunion with all those who were lost. As Winifred ministers to Mary, her vision of the afterlife circulates in the community and attracts local adherents who have similarly suffered losses in the war. Written with the intention of illuminating and bettering the lives of women after the war, The Gates Ajar is an empowering manifesto on conquering grief and a timeless manual for optimism.

U CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP by Larry Malcolm Summary

The reason I wrote this book was to make available stories that prove it is not too late. I had discernment that I should write short stories and mix various topics with both humor and eternal consequences. On October 30, 2012, I was on an elevator flirting with several women. I walked off that elevator with an idea: a book about flirting. During the first week of November 2012, I asked Jesus to give me ideas for a book. In 48 hours, the Holy Spirit gave me 130 ideas for a book. Sixty weeks and 950 hours of work later, I have a complete manuscript. The Bible says I’m just a filthy rag. I’m not a preacher because I’m not called and would be unworthy. I’m not a teacher because I would have no patience, and I’m not a speaker because I’m very shy with large groups. Therefore, the printed virgin*. Maybe I’m an explainer. I prefer to explain my faults and sins rather than point at others. There is a fine line between being judgmental and attempting to explain the truth. I once was told from an old-fashioned “fire and brimstone” preacher that he did not judge people, but people judged themselves with their actions. If U are truly told by “the Son of God” to give someone a message, U better do it. U are not going to like your life for being disobedient. However, U may temporarily not like your life for being obedient. It is a strange dichotomy in the dilemma of life. We have to not wither but have planted seeds in the good ground of life to withstand the persecution. I truly hope those who may feel offended by my humor or Bible’s truths . . . will understand that I’m speaking from my heart and only want to help, and I’m incapable of expressing the right words at the right time in person. Please remember I’m in this struggle too. Just because I have written a book . . . does not mean I am exempted from hell. A walk with Jesus and temptation from the devil is a daily battle. I need your prayers. I’m a long ways from where I want to be in Christ. Larry
