The day of her wedding, 17 year old Ada's life looks good; she loves her husband, and she loves working as an apprentice to her mother, a respected midwife. Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. The Gentleman Outlaw and Me by Mary Downing Hahn Summary

A “ripsnorting western . . . With plenty of twists and turns—and a cameo appearance by Doc Holliday—it’s a real cowgirl triumph” (Kirkus Reviews). In 1887, twelve-year-old Eliza Yates—disguised as a boy—sets out with her faithful dog Caesar to search for her missing father. Along the way, she falls in with gentleman outlaw Calvin Featherbone. “Together, they make their way to Tinville, Colorado, where, coincidentally, Calvin’s father was killed by a certain Sheriff Yates. Calvin plans to avenge the murder, but he gets himself and Eliza in so much trouble with his amateurish schemes that the pair arrives in town ready to be hanged as horse thieves. Hahn’s writing crackles like gunshot in the Ol’ West, and Eliza and Calvin make a lovable team. The plotting is . . . tight and fast paced, and Hahn does a fine job of recreating the atmosphere of the days of cowboys and miners” (Booklist). “Hahn has obviously done her research, and succeeds in bringing the ambiance of the Old West to her novel. The result is a fast, funny, and entertaining adventure that’s just the thing for fans of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”—School Library Journal “An amusing comedy of errors that derives much of its humor from Calvin’s speech and manners and Eliza’s wry asides alluding to her true identity as a girl.”—Kirkus Reviews

Robin has been granted a rare holiday to go to the Nottingham Fair, where he will spend the day with his friends Much and Marian. The Price of Salvation by John Anderson Summary

The Price of Salvation By: John Anderson An old-fashioned telling of an outlaw in the American west, The Price of Salvation follows Thomas St. Hart and his gang, The Brothers of Boudiclare, as they face the deadly odds of modernization and are forced to pick between the sides of good and evil in order to attain their freedom. Thomas’s choice, leaning more towards the likes of God, results in an epic journey across a small section of Arizona to save the few remaining Christians left in the west, while being hunted by his former allies who chose the path of evil, led by none other than Luscious Boudiclare, Thomas’s father figure. Set in 1902, this thrilling tale of outlaws and men of faith has been called a "Whetstone Western": a faith-based western designed to sharpen the mind and symbolic sword of the faithful. With its themes of freedom, faith, and family particularly relevant today, this book brings us to question the very idea of law and order in our time, the concept of freedom and what is truly free, and the price we all must pay in order to attain it, especially when our families are on the line. All of these things are the price of salvation.

THE EVENTS described in the saga of Gisli the Soursop reach from about the year AD930 to AD980. In a time when the law of Iceland had not yet been established and when men were ruled by their conscience. Gisli, a champion of Iceland, was outlawed for murder by the Chieftain Bork at the Thorsness Thing (council). But besides his sentence he was doomed, even before his birth. He and his kin were under a curse, for they had kept the broken bits of "Graysteel," the thrall's good sword, which came with a withering spaedom (spell). So under sentence and under a curse Gisli went on the run. For fourteen years with the help of family, friends and those who really knew the truth, he managed to evade Bork's men and bounty hunters alike. As with many champions through the ages, Gisli was also a true poet and his verses have genuine thought and feeling lying underneath, as you will frequently find in this volume. To the end Gisli fought hard, taking with him eight of the fourteen who eventually cornered him one snowy night on the crags. It has been said by many that there never was a more famous and honourable defence made by one man in times of which the truth is known. Even as death approached Gisli managed to compose and sing one final verse to his wife who stood nearby. It has also been said that this is one of the finest, if it be not the very finest, of the lesser Sagas. When translating it is difficult to grasp the full spirit of the story, but here it has been accomplished with the detail of scenery and costume thoroughly mastered. 33% of the net profit will be donated to charities, schools and special causes.

The Kid by Ron Hansen Summary

“A marvelous journey into both history and imagination…A perfectly compelling and fast-paced story” (San Francisco Chronicle) from Ron Hansen about an iconic American criminal of the old West: legendary outlaw, Billy the Kid. Born Henry McCarty, Billy the Kid was a diminutive, charming, blond-haired young man who, growing up in New York, Kansas, and later New Mexico, demonstrated a precocious dexterity at firing six-shooters with either hand—a skill that both got him into and out of trouble and that turned him into an American legend of the old West. He was smart, well-spoken, attractive to both white and Mexican women, a good dancer, and a man with a nose for money, horses, and trouble. His spree of crimes and murders has been immortalized in dime westerns, novels, and movies. “The Kid’s story has been told many times. But not like this” (The New York Times Book Review). In his incredible novel, Ron Hansen showcases his masterful research and inimitable style as he breathes life into history, bringing readers back into Billy’s boyhood as a ranch hand just trying to wrest a fortune from an unforgiving landscape. We are with Billy in every gunfight and horse theft and get to know him in full before his grand death in a hail of bullets in 1881 at the age of twenty-one. Original, powerful, and swiftly told, The Kid is “entertaining and lively…an excellent, transportive read” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Outlaw Biker: by Richard "Deadeye" Hayes,Mary Gardner Summary

In this no-holds-barred memoir, a legendary biker recounts his life of sex, drugs, rock & roll and lots of broken laws. Here is the true-life story of Richard “Deadeye” Hayes in all its bad-ass, balls-to-the-wall glory. This is a man who stole a machine gun before he was seven and lost his left eye when a good friend shot him in the face. As a member—and then president—of the infamous Los Valientes Motorcycle Club, he broke more laws and had more fun than any six of the coolest guys you know. One of the last true Outlaw Bikers, Deadeye knows what it means to be a man, take shit from no one, and have tattoos that actually say something. Riding, drug dealing, and sending men to the hospital with his bare hands, Deadeye made himself a legend among bikers—all the while making sure his daughters never got mixed up with guys like him. “This may just be the best book ever written by an author who's been shot twice, stabbed once, and bitten by a rattlesnake!” —Geoffrey Leavenworth, author of Isle of Misfortune

Swamp Outlaw by David Ball Summary

The South had lost the Civil War and was losing its soul. Uniformed Rebels who had fought honorably in the light of day now wore tattered sheets in the dark and burned crosses. In armed packs they dragged the helpless Negro or Indian from his bed and stopped his hurried prayers with noose or buckshot. In North Carolina’s Robeson county, the Ku Klux did not see the vengeance it was stirring up: Henry Berry Lowery's gang of Swamp Outlaws, who ruthlessly protected themselves and the county's Indians and Negroes. "We kill anyone who hunts us, from Sheriff on down,” Lowery promised, and by forays out of the swamps to keep that promise he became the highest-bountied outlaw in the nation’s history. This tale of bloody revenge and brilliant survival is drawn from the gang’s real victims, benefactors, and descendants – all as told by the Yankee reporter from the New York Herald who joined the gang to get the story.

The Spirit of Food by Leslie Leyland Fields Summary

You are invited to a feast for the senses and the spirit! Thirty-four adventurous writers open their kitchens, their recipe files, and their hearts to illustrate the many unexpected ways that food draws us closer to God, to community, and to creation. All bring a keen eye and palette to the larger questions of the role of food--both its presence and its absence--in the life of our bodies and spirits. Their essays take us to a Canadian wheat farm, a backyard tomato garden in Cincinnati, an organic farm in Maine; into a kosher kitchen, a line of Hurricane Katrina survivors as they wait to be fed, a church basement for a thirty-hour fast; inside the translucent layers of an onion that transport us to a meditation on heaven, to a church potluck, and to many other places and ways we can experience sacramental eating. In a time of great interest and equal confusion over the place of food in our lives, this rich collection, which includes personal recipes, will delight the senses, feed the spirit, enlarge our understanding, and deepen our ability to "eat and drink to the glory of God."
