I'm Easy... and I Have Bad Taste by Angel K. Adams Summary

A modern chic's journey of self-discovery illustrating, humorously and explicitly, her inability to land (or even date) the right guy. I'm Easy and I Have Bad Taste takes a decidedly lighthearted, irreverent and brutally honest look at contemporary dating-where sex partners are in demand, but quality relationships are in short supply. Adams' chronicle of her dating successes and failures is both hilarious and genuine. She gives her account of ex-boyfriends, dates, domestication and sexual liberation with open honesty and a sense of humor. Her unabashed lifestyle proclaims an end to the sexual double-standard forced upon women for centuries. Her exploration of subjects such as drafting "The List," determining if an encounter qualifies as a one night stand, and giving dating advice to friends make this book impossible to put down. Ultimately, it is about the hope and optimism that keeps her kissing toads while trying to find her Prince Charming. After talking to friends and co-workers, Angel Adams realized she was not alone in her plight to attract the right kind of men into her life. At 29, she wondered at her inability to date 'normal- available-non-creeps' despite her long list of stellar attributes. Writing about the dating quandary of modern women in the single world came easy to Adams when working on this project. An enormous sense of humor helped too. This is her first book, and she makes her home in LA.

A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story by Linda J. Alexander Summary

Bio of 50s movie star & 50s - 70s TV actor, Jack Kelly, co-star of TV's "Maverick" In real life, Jack Kelly was a child performer, son of New York model, Nan Kelly, brother of actress, Nancy Kelly, brother-in-law of actor Edmond O'Brien and cinematographer Fred Jackman, Jr. On TV, from 1957 until 1962, he was James Garner's brother on the show, Maverick. Truth is, he was on the show longer than James Garner ... and women would often say he was the reason they kept coming back for more. In fact, they still say that, even though the show’s been in re-runs for decades, ever since it left the air. Oh yeah ... he was also a child star in the late 1930s, drove A Crooked Road with Mickey Rooney in 1954, went to Hell and Back with Audie Murphy in 1955, and took a trip to the Forbidden Planet in 1956 with Leslie Nielsen. In the late 1960s, he was on the cutting edge of Sale of The Century as the host, was able to Get Christie Love in 1975, and helped babysit the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew in 1977. Between the late 1950s and early 1970s, he played on virtually every episodic TV show that ever aired. All of this before he pseudo-retired from the small and large screen and served as a city councilman, and then the two-term mayor, of Huntington Beach, California. He was also a newspaper publisher. He loved some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, became a husband, and would probably tell everyone that his greatest joy was in being a father. Jack Kelly really LIVED.

He is easily the best poker player from his suburban enclave in Maryland to Washington, DC. He craves the nightlife and can’t imagine being tied down to a desk job or saddled with the responsibilities of most men of his age. At a crossroads, Joey will have to decide whether to fold or go all in on everything unexpected that life has to offer. “The novel masterfully sucks you right in, at the very first page, into its world. Why You're Not Married... Yet by Tracy McMillan Summary

With three marriages under her belt, Tracy McMillan KNOWS how to get married, and she knows exactly why so many other women still aren't. In Why You're Not Married... Yet, she pulls no punches telling the modern woman precisely what she's doing wrong. Based on Tracy's Valentine's Day Huffington Post article of the same title, her new book explores how and why women are standing in their own way when it comes to tying the knot. Shortly after its publication, the article went viral, garnering 1,404,533 views, and now stands as the Huffington Post'ssecond most viewed article of all time - and probably one of its most rebutted, having spawned strong response articles on, The Frisky, and countless blogs. With chapters like ‘You're a bitch,' ‘You're Godless,' and ‘You're selfish,' Tracy details in straightforward language ten reasons why single women are still single. But it's not all tough love; she also offers up seriously sage advice, along with insight into how her desperate search for security as a child in foster care taught her to look for very specific traits in the men she dated - traits that just so happen to lead to marriage a surprisingly high percentage of the time. Tracy doesn't pretend to be an expert on lasting relationships - and says as much to whomever will listen - but she WILL get women down the aisle, with biting humor, wicked smarts, and heart to spare.

All the Men Are Sleeping by D.R. MacDonald Summary

Bestselling and award-winning writer D. R. MacDonald gives us a searing and muscular collection of short fiction reminiscent of Richard Ford and Alistair MacLeod. With All the Men Are Sleeping, celebrated author D. R. MacDonald delivers a haunting collection of short fiction remarkable for its restrained passion and eloquence. As he did with Cape Breton Road, MacDonald writes of disruption and loss with brusque tenderness. He deftly explores the misunderstandings between men and women, the nature of seduction and infidelity, the way geography shapes identity, and the heartache of longing -- for home, family, love. For a fisherman in “The Flowers for Bermuda” time has not repaid the loss of his young son’s life. In “The Wharf King” a man returns to Cape Breton to bury his brother, and performs a dangerous rite of passage in an attempt to recapture the past. Little Norman in “Work” is rudderless without the companionship of his lifelong workmate. The brilliant force of the fiction collected here -- some of it published in MacDonald’s award-winning Eyestone -- will delight MacDonald’s fans just as it will astonish new readers. Each of the stories in All the Men Are Sleeping stands alone, but together they offer a heartrending elegy for lost loves and time-forgotten places.

The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories by P. G. Wodehouse Summary

Notable for the first appearance of P.G Wodehouse’s popular reoccurring characters, Bertie and Jeeves, The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories features thirteen funny and sentimental works of short fiction. The first story in the collection, Bill the Bloodhound follows a young detective named Henry Rice, who is in love with Alice, a woman who sings in a chorus. When Alice declines Henry’s marriage proposal, she admits that while she finds Henry sweet, she only wants to marry someone from her profession. Desperate for Alice’s love, Henry gives theater a try. Taking on an interesting perspective, two stories in the collection, The Mixer: He Meets a Shy Gentleman, and The Mixer: He Moves in Society features the narration of a terrier-boxer mix dog, who is incredibly social and observes the behavior of the humans around him. In Extricating Young Gussie, the famed characters Bertie and Jeeves are introduced. When Bertie’s cousin, Gussie, is set on marrying a woman that his mother does not approve of, Bertie’s aunt, Agatha, begs Bertie and Jeeves to convince her son to do otherwise. Finally, the title piece of the collection, The Man with Two Left Feet depicts a sweet and tender love story, following a man named Henry and his wife, Minnie. Though they share a comfortable relationship, Henry fears that he is boring. In attempts to surprise and impress Minnie, Henry, who is a rhythmless man, attempts to learn how to dance. Set in both London and New York, P.G Wodehouse’s The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories feature a variety of settings just as it portrays an eclectic mix of protagonists. Crafted with masterful humor and a light-hearted tone, The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories remains to be a timeless collection of sentiment and humor. This edition of The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories by P.G Wodehouse features a new, eye-catching cover design and is printed in a modern font to accommodate a contemporary audience.

Upon his release from a prisoner-of-war camp, Ferdinand Timpe returns somewhat uneasily to civilian life in Cologne. Having survived against the odds, he is now faced with a very different sort of dilemma: How to get rid of his fiancée? Although he certainly doesn’t love the mild-mannered Luise, Ferdinand is too considerate to break off the engagement himself, so he sets about finding her a suitable replacement husband—no easy task given Luise’s high standards and those of her father, formerly a proud middle-ranking Nazi official. Featuring a lively cast of characters—from Ferdinand’s unscrupulous landlady with her black-market schemes to his beguiling cousin Johanna and the many loves of her life—Ferdinand captures a distinct moment in Germany’s history, when its people were coming to terms with World War II and searching for a way forward. In Irmgard Keun’s effervescent prose, the story feels remarkably modern.

The Man Who Swam into History by Robert A. Rosenstone Summary

The story begins with a grandfather who heroically escaped from Russia by swimming the Pruth River to Romania—or did he? Then there are stories of another grandfather who kept a lifelong mistress; grandmothers who were ignored except in the kitchen; migrations legal and illegal from Eastern Europe to Canada to California; racketeers on one side of the family and Communists on the other; and a West Coast adolescence in the McCarthy years. All of these (mostly true) stories form a Jewish family's history, a tale of dislocation and assimilation. But in the hands of award-winning historian Robert Rosenstone, they become much more. The fragments of memory so beautifully preserved in The Man Who Swam into History add unforgettable, human characters to the now familiar story of the Jewish diaspora in the twentieth century. This combination memoir/short story collection recounts the Rosenstone family's passage from Romania to America. Robert Rosenstone tells the story not as a single, linear narrative, but through "tales, sequences, windows, moments, and fragments resurrected from the lives of three generations in my two parental families, set in five countries on two continents over the period of almost a century." This more literary and personal approach allows Rosenstone's relatives to emerge as distinct personalities, voices who quarrel and gossip, share their dreams and fears, and maintain the ties of a loving, if eccentric, family. Among the genre of "coming to America" tales, The Man Who Swam into History is a work of unique vision, one that both records and reconstructs the past even as it continuously—and humorously—questions the truth of its own assertions.

Working with Men by Kate Cavanagh,Viviene E Cree Summary

One of feminism's key contributions to improving social work practice has been to expose the gender-blindness which has characterized social work policy and literature. Working with Men extends and diversifies this contribution by presenting a controversial collection of essays written by feminists about men. In what has been a previously unexplored area of social work, the contributors to Working with Men, feminist academics, researchers and practitioners, explore the issue of feminist practice with men highlighting the dilemmas which they have encountered in undertaking this work. They contend that for too long feminists have ignored the issue of direct work with men. The argument that men must take responsibility for their own reconstruction they assert is no longer sustainable: feminists must generate their own discourse about the nature of men and masculinity derived from their own experience of critically engaging with and challenging men. The contributors conclude that direct work with men is a legitimate feminist activity; that it is one important strand of a broader strategy whose ultimate goal is the empowerment of women. This book will be valuable reading for all students of social work and applied social science as well as social work practitioners and managers.
