If the Body Politic Could Breathe in the Age of the Refugee by Summary

This book posits that the ‘refugee crisis’ may actually be a crisis of identity in a rapidly changing world. It argues that Western conceptions of the individual ‘Self’ shape metaphors of political homes, and thus the geopolitics of belonging and exclusion. Metzger-Traber creatively re-conceives political belonging by perceiving the interconnection of each ‘Self’ through its most immediate home – the breathing body. On an experimental literary journey through her own past and that of Germany, she puts political philosophy in conversation with somatic and spiritual insight to expand notions of ‘Self’ and 'Home'. Then she asks: What ethical imperatives arise? What kinds of homes and homelands would we create if we no longer thought we ended at our skin?

Allegra Cobb’s resume: straight-A Princeton grad, second-year analyst at a top-tier bank, one-time American Yoga National Competition Champion. Allegra Cobb’s reality: Spending twenty-four hours a day changing the colors on bar charts, overusing the word “team,” and daydreaming about quitting the minute her year-end bonus hits her account. She no longer has no interest in the cutthroat banking world—she’s determined to launch her very own yoga practice. But her plan isn’t quite as perfect as the beachfront yoga pictures she double-taps on Instagram. On top of the 100 emails an hour and coworkers already suspicious of her escape plan, Allegra’s hard-driving single father has always fiercely valued high achievement above all else. That his daughter works on Wall Street means everything to him. But after a) unknowingly sleeping with the man now leading her banking cohort on one of their biggest deals to date and b) meeting the #blessed yoga guru who might just be her ticket to the life she’s always wanted, she realizes her happy-ever-after might be harder to manifest than she thought. Fast-paced, laugh-out-loud funny, and totally irresistible, Breathe In, Cash Out “is a modern fairytale, a romance that’s not about finding the right guy, but finding yourself” (Eliza Kennedy, author of I Take You).

Breathe In (Just Breathe #1) by Martha Sweeney Summary

REVISED Edition with NEW COVER! I have eight golden rules when it comes to men; 1. No dating or going out on dates. 2. Never let them know where I live. Lie if I must. 3. Never pick up a guy in a particular social setting that I may frequently attend. Or, never sleep with a man whom I have the chance of running into on a regular basis. 4. Never have a guy over to my apartment for any reason. My gay best friends are the only exceptions. 5. Always end things before a guy starts to want more. 6. Always use protection. 7. Never sleep over at their place after sex. Once we've finished, or in most cases, they've finished, dress and leave. 8. Always have more than one exit strategy. Orphaned at age sixteen, Emma, now twenty-four, has complete control of her life. She is a private, successful business woman who owns two companies and uses men for sex. When Emma's sexual itch arises, and there are no possible male suitors to fill her need, she finds alternative means. Emma keeps most people at a distance, especially the men she has sex with, except her two best friends, Maggie and Jared. She adheres to her eight golden rules that keep her safe and in complete control — rules that she started after having sex with the first man. Rules that keep her guarded, safe and free — but then, along came Joe Covelli. Please note: There are sexually explicit scenes F/M and F/F/M

Big Breath In by George Keulen Summary

Big Breath In follows the ups and fateful downs of living with cystic fibrosis (CF), the journey to receiving a double lung transplant, and the hope of a second chance at life that transplant brings. Documenting the daily struggle of living with CF, George outlines both CF’s deadly consequences and how it works. Despite this, he stresses that people with CF are like everyone else, just trying to navigate the unpredictability of regular life, but through a CF lens. Documenting George’s declining health, culminating in being wait-listed for a double lung transplant, Big Breath In speaks to what it’s like to live with significantly decreased lung function, and what the process is to be wait-listed. George reveals his own struggle in trying to accept the "new normals" that his fragile health brought, and his need to let go of his "old life" and accept the new life he finds himself living. Over a year and a half later, perilously close to death, George kept waiting for a phone call that might not come in time. When a match is finally found, the longest wait of his life begins, complete with giant waves of hope and despair. In addition to writing about his surgery and immediate recovery in hospital, he also writes about other character-forming events, including the death of his brother, and meeting, dating, and marrying his wife. His experiences shaped him in incredible ways and helped him fight for his second chance at life.

Breath by James Nestor Summary

A New York Times Bestseller A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2020 Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR “A fascinating scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history of the way humans breathe—and how we’ve all been doing it wrong for a long, long time.” —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat twenty-five thousand times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe. Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.

The Air You Breathe by Frances de Pontes Peebles Summary

"[A] glorious, glittery saga of friendship and loss... I read The Air You Breathe in two nights. (One might say I inhaled it.)." --NPR "Echoes of Elena Ferrante resound in this sumptuous saga."--O, The Oprah Magazine "Enveloping...Peebles understands the shifting currents of female friendship, and she writes so vividly about samba that you close the book certain its heroine's voices must exist beyond the page." -People The story of an intense female friendship fueled by affection, envy and pride--and each woman's fear that she would be nothing without the other. Some friendships, like romance, have the feeling of fate. Skinny, nine-year-old orphaned Dores is working in the kitchen of a sugar plantation in 1930s Brazil when in walks a girl who changes everything. Graça, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy sugar baron, is clever, well fed, pretty, and thrillingly ill behaved. Born to wildly different worlds, Dores and Graça quickly bond over shared mischief, and then, on a deeper level, over music. One has a voice like a songbird; the other feels melodies in her soul and composes lyrics to match. Music will become their shared passion, the source of their partnership and their rivalry, and for each, the only way out of the life to which each was born. But only one of the two is destined to be a star. Their intimate, volatile bond will determine each of their fortunes--and haunt their memories. Traveling from Brazil's inland sugar plantations to the rowdy streets of Rio de Janeiro's famous Lapa neighborhood, from Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood back to the irresistible drumbeat of home, The Air You Breathe unfurls a moving portrait of a lifelong friendship--its unparalleled rewards and lasting losses--and considers what we owe to the relationships that shape our lives.

The Invisible Actor by Yoshi Oida,Lorna Marshall Summary

The Invisible Actor presents the captivating and unique methods of the distinguished Japanese actor and director, Yoshi Oida. While a member of Peter Brook's theatre company in Paris, Yoshi Oida developed a masterful approach to acting that combined the oriental tradition of supreme and studied control with the Western performer's need to characterise and expose depths of emotion. Written with Lorna Marshall, Yoshi Oida explains that once the audience becomes openly aware of the actor's method and becomes too conscious of the actor's artistry, the wonder of performance dies. The audience must never see the actor but only his or her performance. Throughout Lorna Marshall provides contextual commentary on Yoshi Oida's work and methods. In a new foreword to accompany the Bloomsbury Revelations edition, Yoshi Oida revisits the questions that have informed his career as an actor and explores how his skilful approach to acting has shaped the wider contours of his life.

STANDING IN PRAYER FOR THE WORLD by Sr. Christiana Ntamere Summary

This book, “STANDING IN PRAYER FOR THE WORLD” is the fruit of a hard work asserting that life situation can produce positive effect through discernment and prayer. It highlighted the knowledge and spiritual enrichment emanating from keen observation and discernment of God’s presence in His creation, which Sr. Christiana gained from extensive travels as a busy Bursar General “panting for quality time with the Lord.” It is a book of four chapters. The first Chapter articulated operational Divine mechanism available to children of God in “quality time with the Lord.” Quality time is a possibility in every situation including busy and stressful times. In Chapter two the book challenges us to pray for people especially, our weak brothers, sisters and leaders, so that “devil will not mess them up.” Chapter three is devoted to prayers for our ministers to live out their vocation so that they can serve the people of God faithfully in the spirit of God who chose them for special ministry. The final chapter reflected on the churches’ moral virtues compounded into prayers that uplift the mind of the one praying, based on the ethics of the virtues of obedience, faith, hope, charity, joy, kindness and humility. It includes a poem on the mystery of death, which puzzles humanity including Sister Christiana who lost both parents within three months interval. Reflection on the mystery of death builds hope cemented with prayers of total trust in God in all circumstances of life. This book therefore, is theologically sound and thought awakening to the wonders of the Almighty God made visible in the author’s gravity of understanding and experience. This is a book worth reading for spiritual uplift and enrichment. It stands the test of time! Simply put, it is a book for all seasons. Very Rev. Seed to Harvest by Shawna DeForest Morby Summary

Do you ever wonder why the Bible uses so many references to seeds, plants, and harvest? Or why the first home for humanity was a garden? Does the abundance of foliage all around us perhaps have some wisdom from our maker entwined within its roots? When we compare our lives to the life cycle of plants, we can see similarities that allow us to relate, and in that relationship, there is wisdom and answers. Our world is surrounded by plant life in various stages of their life cycle, from seed form to harvest. There's no mistake that God first created a garden and had us work the ground. God's garden is the world around us! When we sit in the garden, not only are we blessed by God's colorful artistry, but we find wisdom for how to live our lives in abundance, producing fruit for God's harvest. As you read this book, you will discover God's love, his plan, and his purpose for you as you compare yourself to the seed, sprout, leaves, flowers, fruit, and harvest. You will also learn from God's divine design as we study the storms and pests that may hinder growth and stall or completely stop a potential harvest. How can we be prepared to weather the storms in our life? Is there something to be learned from the plants that have survived through drought, storms, and pests? You do not have to be a farmer or gardener to enjoy this book because everything we discuss is all around you! If your thumb isn't even the faintest bit of green you can still gain great wisdom from this book. God does not call the qualified but qualifies the called and that is you! Believe it or not, you are valuable. You are important in God's massive design, and he wants your help with the harvest. This book dives deep into the promises of God and how he planted you specifically with a purpose to enact change in this world, whether big or small, it's all impactful and so are you. 2

Ink Smudged Dreams- by the Reading Light. by Debaleena Mukherjee Summary

Ink-Smudged Dreams- by the Reading Light’ is a collection of poems. Poems that reflect the many facets of my life: maybe any woman’s life. Certain moments, fleeting experiences, lasting impressions, unknown anxieties, silly apprehensions, humble realization, intense joys and every hurt felt; these are the poems’ moods . And above all a growing perception that life is not about tomorrow: it is about today. But all these are not my consciously addressed ideas. Each day, they have gently enfolded me. Then in the quiet of the night, I would sit down and pour my heart out on paper. Drowsy, blurred, and very close to my heart. These are those ink-smudged dreams by the reading light. - DEBALEENA MUKHERJEE
