Business Groups in East Asia by Sea-Jin Chang Summary

The 1997 Asian Crisis principally affected Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Korea, as well as other East Asian countries heavily dependent on intra-regional trade. Banks and other financial institutions quickly become insolvent, and heavily indebted industrial firms went bankrupt. Many of these firms were affiliated with the business groups of this region, yet most groups did not immediately collapse, indeed they proved remarkably robust, some surviving and even prospering. This book examines these East Asian business groups and their subsequent restructuring following the Asian Crisis. East Asian nations embarked on very different trajectories to this common external shock. The Asian Crisis affected the inter-relationships among the socio-cultural environment, the state, and the market of each country quite differently and had distinct effects on the operations of these countries' business groups. This slow yet divergent pattern of development provides evidence against theories of rapid global convergence. Yet East Asian business groups face an uncertain future. Foreign investors' influence has increased substantially since the crisis, as East Asian governments had to accommodate their demands to keep attracting foreign capital. Governments supervise banks more closely and have loosened restrictions on mergers and hostile takeovers, further strengthening the discipline of the market. Various entry barriers that had inhibited foreign multinationals from competing in national markets were lifted, exposing business groups to intensified foreign competition. Under these new conditions, business groups in East Asia should reconfigure their business structures and adjust their corporate governance systems to regain momentum for further growth. Business groups will continue to be important vehicles for the sustained future growth of this region, and this book presents a substantial amount of new data on this, which will be of interest to academics, researchers, and advanced students of East Asian business, and business practitioners working within the region.

Stress and Distress among the Unemployed by Clifford L. Broman,V. Lee Hamilton,William S. Hoffman Summary

Employing both large-scale surveys and in-depth interviews, the authors document the mental health effects on workers caused by the closure of four General Motor plants. They paint a portrait of how the social context in which these workers lived played a critical role in their experiences of unemployment or of keeping their jobs when others around them lost theirs. More than simply a study of unemployment and mental health, this book is also a story of coping and resilience.

Nonparametric Statistical Tests by Markus Neuhauser Summary

Nonparametric Statistical Tests: A Computational Approach describes classical nonparametric tests, as well as novel and little-known methods such as the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler and the Cucconi tests. The book presents SAS and R programs, allowing readers to carry out the different statistical methods, such as permutation and bootstrap tests. The author considers example data sets in each chapter to illustrate methods. Numerous real-life data from various areas, including the bible, and their analyses provide for greatly diversified reading. The book covers: Nonparametric two-sample tests for the location-shift model, specifically the Fisher-Pitman permutation test, the Wilcoxon rank sum test, and the Baumgartner-Weiss-Schindler test Permutation tests, location-scale tests, tests for the nonparametric Behrens-Fisher problem, and tests for a difference in variability Tests for the general alternative, including the (Kolmogorov-)Smirnov test, ordered categorical, and discrete numerical data Well-known one-sample tests such as the sign test and Wilcoxon’s signed rank test, a modification suggested by Pratt (1959), a permutation test with original observations, and a one-sample bootstrap test are presented. Tests for more than two groups, the following tests are described in detail: the Kruskal-Wallis test, the permutation F test, the Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test, tests for umbrella alternatives, and the Friedman and Page tests for multiple dependent groups The concepts of independence and correlation, and stratified tests such as the van Elteren test and combination tests The applicability of computer-intensive methods such as bootstrap and permutation tests for non-standard situations and complex designs Although the major development of nonparametric methods came to a certain end in the 1970s, their importance undoubtedly persists. What is still needed is a computer assisted evaluation of their main properties. This book closes that gap.

In this book, leading methodologists address the issue of how effectively to apply the latest developments in social network analysis to behavioural and social science disciplines. Topics examined include: ways to specify the network contents to be studied; how to select the method for representing network structures; how social network analysis has been used to study interorganizational relations via the resource dependence model; how to use a contact matrix for studying the spread of disease in epidemiology; and how cohesion and structural equivalence network theories relate to studying social influence. The book also offers some statistical models for social support networks.

Class, Politics and the Economy (Routledge Revivals) by Stewart Clegg,Paul Boreham,Geoff Dow Summary

This study, first published in 1986, provides a systematic account of the processes and structure of class formation in the major advanced capitalist societies. The focus is on the organizational mechanisms of class cohesion and division, theoretically deriving from a neo-Marxian perspective. Chapters consider the organization and structure of the ‘corporate ruling class’, the middle class and the working class, and are brought together in an overarching analysis of the organization of class in relation to the state and the economy. This title will be of particular interest to students researching the impact of recession on societal structure and the processes of political class struggle, as well as those with a more general interest in the socio-economic theories of Marx, Engels and Weber.

Advances in Multidisciplinary Retrieval by Hamish Cunningham,Allan Hanbury,Stefan Rüger Summary

These proceedings contain the refereed papers and posters presented at the ?rst Information Retrieval Facility Conference (IRFC), which was held in Vienna on 31 May 2010. The conference provides a multi-disciplinary, scienti?c forum that aims to bring young researchers into contact with industry at an early stage. IRFC 2010 received 20 high-quality submissions, of which 11 were accepted and appear here. The decision whether a paper was presented orally or as poster was solely based on what we thought was the most suitable form of communi- tion, considering we had only a single day for the event. In particular, the form of presentation bears no relation to the quality of the accepted papers, all of which were thoroughly peer reviewed and had to be endorsed by at least three independent reviewers. The Information Retrieval Facility (IRF) is an open IR research institution, managedby a scienti?c board drawnfrom a panel of internationalexperts in the ?eldwhoseroleistopromotethehighestqualityintheresearchsupportedbythe facility. As a non-pro?t research institution, the IRF provides services to IR s- ence in the form of a reference laboratory, hardwareand softwareinfrastructure. Committed to Open Science concepts, the IRF promotes publication of recent scienti?c results and newly developed methods, both in traditional paper form and as data sets freely available to IRF members. Such transparency ensures objective evaluation and comparabilityof results and consequently diversity and sustainability of their further development.

Corporate Power and Canadian Capitalism by William K. Carroll Summary

Challenging standard dependency theory, William Carroll argues from empirical evidence that Canada's financial-industrial elite have maintained and consolidated their competitive position at the centre of an inter-corporate network. Corporate Power and Canadian Capitalism thus acknowledges the unusually high degree to which capital is concentrated in a relatively few giant corporations in Canada, but it denies that these commercial interests are subordinated to American corporate capital. To test the validity of this new perspective on the transformation of indigenous capitalists into a national bourgeoisie, Carroll traces the accumulation of capital in the largest Canadian corporations and the institutional relations that have existed among the same firms since World War II. Instead of selling out to foreign capital, Canadian firms have in fact become increasingly interlocked, and Canadian-controlled firms have been and continue to be the focus of both the industrial and financial sectors, with foreign-controlled companies occupying decidedly peripheral positions. From this interpretative position, Canada's development is seen as markedly similar to that of other advanced capitalist countries, culminating in consolidation of control under an elite accompanied both by penetration of foreign economies by domestic financial capitalists and a concomitant penetration of the domestic economy by foreign capital.

The US Senate and the Commonwealth by Mitch McConnell,Roy E. BrownellII Summary

Kentucky has long punched above its weight in the US Senate, as some of the nation's most distinguished senators have hailed from the Commonwealth. Despite its relatively small population for much of American history, Kentucky has produced a record two Senate majority leaders, a record three Senate majority whips, and one of the country's greatest lawmakers, Henry Clay. These Kentuckians played an important role in the evolution of leadership institutions in the Senate. Official positions such as Senate majority leader and majority whip are nowhere to be found in the Constitution or early American history, yet today these offices have essentially eclipsed the constitutionally created legislative leadership positions of vice president and president pro tempore. While Kentucky senators have played a vital role in leading the Senate and in its institutional history, no book has told the story in its entirety. The US Senate and the Commonwealth is the first book of its kind to provide a detailed, yet accessible, discussion of the US Senate's leadership throughout its 225-year history. Senator Mitch McConnell and Roy E. Brownell II weave together the history of the Senate with lively portraits of prominent Kentucky senators as well as firsthand reflections about legislative leadership by a Senate majority leader. The authors illuminate and humanize this discussion by exploring the colorful and vivid lives of fifteen Kentucky lawmakers, including Henry Clay, Alben Barkley, and John Sherman Cooper. This compelling and fascinating study is an essential resource.

A TRIBUTE TO THE SADR MARTYRS by Yasin T. al-Jibouri Summary

This book contains information which may be available for the first time in English. It discusses three prominent individuals who were executed by the dictatorial government of Saddam Hussein due to their dissent and despite their prominent status as scholars, theologians, thinkers and philosophers who deserve a prominent place in the annals of history. The world is yet to grant them the recognition they deserve, and this book is a humble attempt to introduce them to the conscience of the world. The most prominent among them is Muhammed-Baqir al-Sadr who is famous worldwide for two of his scholarly works: Iqtisaduna (Our Economics) and Falsafatuna (Our Philosophy). He invented a theory about an interest-free banking system which has been hailed as a rebuttal to the capitalist, socialist and Marxist theories of how the financial system of a nation ought to be. His sister, known as “Bint al-Huda,” was a storywriter, social organizer and poetess who used her pen to fight the immoralities of the regime of the “Butcher of Baghdad”. Muhammed Muhammed-Sadiq al-Sadr is the most senior of the three, yet this did not prevent the regime from executing him due to the large following he had, his popularity and outspoken criticism of the oppressive policies of the regime, a man who will always be remembered for his scholarship, dynamic personality and courage.

Principles of Economic Sociology by Richard Swedberg Summary

The last fifteen years have witnessed an explosion in the popularity, creativity, and productiveness of economic sociology, an approach that traces its roots back to Max Weber. This important new text offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of economic sociology. It also advances the field theoretically by highlighting, in one analysis, the crucial economic roles of both interests and social relations. Richard Swedberg describes the field's critical insights into economic life, giving particular attention to the effects of culture on economic phenomena and the ways that economic actions are embedded in social structures. He examines the full range of economic institutions and explicates the relationship of the economy to politics, law, culture, and gender. Swedberg notes that sociologists too often fail to properly emphasize the role that self-interested behavior plays in economic decisions, while economists frequently underestimate the importance of social relations. Thus, he argues that the next major task for economic sociology is to develop a theoretical and empirical understanding of how interests and social relations work in combination to affect economic action. Written by an author whose name is synonymous with economic sociology, this text constitutes a sorely needed advanced synthesis--and a blueprint for the future of this burgeoning field.

Temporal Patterns of Communication in Social Networks by Giovanna Miritello Summary

The main interest of this research has been in understanding and characterizing large networks of human interactions as continuously changing objects. In fact, although many real social networks are dynamic networks whose elements and properties continuously change over time, traditional approaches to social network analysis are essentially static, thus neglecting all temporal aspects. Specifically, we have investigated the role that temporal patterns of human interaction play in three main fields of social network analysis and data mining: characterization of time (or attention) allocation in social networks, prediction of link decay/persistence, and information spreading. In order to address this we analyzed large anonymized data sets of phone call communication traces over long periods of time. Access to these observations was granted by Telefonica Research, Spain. The findings that emerge from our research indicate that the observed heterogeneities and correlations of human temporal patterns of interaction significantly affect the traditional view of social networks, shifting from a very steady to a highly complex entity. Since structure and dynamics are tightly coupled, they cannot be disentangled in the analysis and modeling of human behavior, though traditional models seek to do so. Our results impact not only the way in which social network are traditionally characterized, but more importantly also the understanding and modeling phenomena such as group formation, spread of epidemics, and the dissemination of ideas, opinions and information.

A Revolution in Rhyme by Fatemeh Shams Summary

A Revolution in Rhyme: Poetic Co-option under the Islamic Republic offers, for the first time, an original, timely examination of the pivotal role poetry plays in policy, power and political legitimacy in modern-day Iran. Through a compelling chronological and thematic framework, Shams presents fresh insights into the emerging lexicon of coercion and unrest in the modern Persian canon. Analysis of the lives and work of ten key poets traces the evolution of the Islamic Republic, from the 1979 Revolution, through to the Iran-Iraq War, the death of a leader and the rise of internal conflicts. Ancient forms jostle against didactic ideologies, exposing the complex relationship between poetry, patronage and literary production in authoritarian regimes, shedding light on a crucial area of discourse that has been hitherto overlooked.

Putin's Russia: Really Back? by Aldo Ferrari Summary

Attempts by Washington and Brussels to push Russia to the fringes of global politics because of the Ukrainian crisis seem to have failed. Thanks to its important role in mediating the Iranian nuclear agreement, and to its unexpected military intervention in Syria, Moscow proved once again to be a key player in international politics. However, Russia’s recovered assertiveness may represents a challenge to the uncertain leadership of the West. This report aims to gauging Russia’s current role in the light of recent developments on the international stage. The overall Russian foreign policy strategy is examined by taking into account its most important issues: Ukraine and the relationship with the West; the Middle East (intervention in Syria, and ongoing relations with Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia); the development of the Eurasian Economic Union; the Russian pivot towards Asia, and China in particular. The volume also analyzes if and to what extent Moscow can fulfill its ambitions in a context of falling oil prices and international sanctions.

Applications of Mathematics in Models, Artificial Neural Networks and Arts by Vittorio Capecchi,Massimo Buscema,Pierluigi Contucci,Bruno D'Amore Summary

The book shows a very original organization addressing in a non traditional way, but with a systematic approach, to who has an interest in using mathematics in the social sciences. The book is divided in four parts: (a) a historical part, written by Vittorio Capecchi which helps us understand the changes in the relationship between mathematics and sociology by analyzing the mathematical models of Paul F. Lazarsfeld, the model of simulation and artificial societies, models of artificial neural network and considering all the changes in scientific paradigms considered; (b) a part coordinated by Pier Luigi Contucci on mathematical models that consider the relationship between the mathematical models that come from physics and linguistics to arrive at the study of society and those which are born within sociology and economics; (c) a part coordinated by Massimo Buscema analyzing models of artificial neural networks; (d) a part coordinated by Bruno D’Amore which considers the relationship between mathematics and art. The title of the book "Mathematics and Society" was chosen because the mathematical applications exposed in the book allow you to address two major issues: (a) the general theme of technological innovation and quality of life (among the essays are on display mathematical applications to the problems of combating pollution and crime, applications to mathematical problems of immigration, mathematical applications to the problems of medical diagnosis, etc.) (b) the general theme of technical innovation and creativity, for example the art and mathematics section which connects to the theme of creative cities. The book is very original because it is not addressed only to those who are passionate about mathematical applications in social science but also to those who, in different societies, are: (a) involved in technological innovation to improve the quality of life; (b) involved in the wider distribution of technological innovation in different areas of creativity (as in the project "Creative Cities Network" of UNESCO).

To Live Is to Resist by Jean-Yves Frétigné Summary

This in-depth biography of Italian intellectual Antonio Gramsci casts new light on his life and writing, emphasizing his unflagging spirit, even in the many years he spent in prison. One of the most influential political thinkers of the twentieth century, Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937) has left an indelible mark on philosophy and critical theory. His innovative work on history, society, power, and the state has influenced several generations of readers and political activists, and even shaped important developments in postcolonial thought. But Gramsci’s thinking is scattered across the thousands of notebook pages he wrote while he was imprisoned by Italy’s fascist government from 1926 until shortly before his death. To guide readers through Gramsci’s life and works, historian Jean-Yves Frétigné offers To Live Is to Resist, an accessible, compelling, and deeply researched portrait of an extraordinary figure. Throughout the book, Frétigné emphasizes Gramsci’s quiet heroism and his unwavering commitment to political practice and resistance. Most powerfully, he shows how Gramsci never surrendered, even in conditions that stripped him of all power—except, of course, the power to think.

Prison Education and Desistance by Geraldine Cleere Summary

This book explores prisoners’ experiences of prison education and investigates whether participation in prison education contributes to an offender’s ability to desist from crime and increases social capital levels. While the link between prison education and reduced rates of recidivism is well established through research, far less is known about the relationship between prison education and desistance. The book demonstrates how prisoners experience many benefits from participating in prison education, including increased confidence, self-control and agency, along with various other cognitive changes. In addition, the book examines prisoners’ accounts that provide evidence of strong connections between prison education and the formation of pro-social bonds which have been shown to play a role in the desistance process. It also highlights the links between prison education and social capital, and the existence of a form of prison-based social capital arising from the prison culture. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to those engaged in criminology, sociology, penology, desistance, rehabilitation, the sociology of education and all those interested in learning more about the positive impact of prison education on prisoners.
