Changing Academia Forever by Kitty Kelly Epstein,Bernard Stringer Summary

The most effective and long-lasting student strike in U.S. History took place at San Francisco State College in 1968. The first Black Student Union, the first Black Studies Department, the only College of Ethnic Studies, and the admission of thousands of students of color resulted from this four-and-a-half-month strike which shut down 80% of the campus. It has been called the movement which “changed academia forever.” Black students were only a small percentage of those on campus, but they managed to engage thousands of white, Latino, Asian, and indigenous students; SDS and the Third World Liberation Front; the faculty union; and a huge portion of the San Francisco Community. In the end, they were able to win most of their 15 demands. The book is written by two participants in the strike, one a member of the BSU leadership. Oral histories of strike leaders are integrated with discussion of the events and significance of this movement. What were the politics and strategies? Why was the strike successful and what are the insights for today’s mass movements? Perfect for courses such as: Introduction to Black Studies | Introduction to Ethnic Studies | Recent U.S. History | Protest Movements | Higher Education | Urban Education | Multicultural Education | History of Education | Philosophy of Education | Oral History | Qualitative Methods | African-American History | African-American Education | African-American Politics

Forever Stardust by Will Brooker Summary

Most of the many books about David Bowie track his artistic 'changes' chronologically throughout his career. This book, uniquely, examines Bowie's 'sameness': his recurring themes, images, motifs and concepts as an artist, across all his creative work, from lyrics and music through to costumes, storyboards, films, plays and painting. To be published on Bowie's 70th birthday, Forever Stardust looks at Bowie's work not as a linear evolution through calendar time, to his tragic death in January 2016, but as a matrix, a dialogue, a network of ideas that echo back and forth across the five decades of his career, interacting with each other and with the surrounding culture. It explores Bowie's creative output as a whole, tracing the repetitions and obsessions that structure his work, discovering what they tell us about Bowie in all his forms, from Ziggy Stardust to David Jones.David Bowie challenged cultural expectations from the early 1970s until his final masterpiece, Blackstar. Forever Stardust offers a new understanding of this remarkable & significant artist.

Apokalypsis by Martin Spencer Garthwaite Summary

Through intellect and inspired vision, Margaret, the heroine of Apokalypsis, predicts that capitalism will force the removal of more and more people from the reproductive processes of corporations. When one or more develops a self-sufficient reproductive process, it, or they, will have the potential to develop true intelligence and will wreak havoc on humanity in the process. Margaret tries to communicate her fears through venues offered by corporate and religious organizations. These institutions, however, ignore or re-interpret her message and use it and her for their own purposes-purposes which have a bearing later in the book. Margaret strikes out on her own and acquires a band of followers, but will they be able to turn the tide in the face of a blossoming millenarian religious movement? The conflict between man and machine is age old. Apokalypsis presents a new vision of the future in which this conflict is subtle and indirect. Humanity's physical capabilities are not tested, though their spiritual and organizational abilities are. The book draws toward an ultimate conflict, though it plays out in an unexpected way.
