Haunting Miss Trentwood by Belinda Kroll Summary

"Haunting Miss Trentwood is very well written with clever dialog and a rambunctious ghost. (Who wouldn't love that?) I spent an entire day reading it because I was unable to put it down, and I came away satisfied by the ending. It was a very enjoyable read. Humorous, but never over the top." - N.M. Martinez"Haunting Miss Trentwood is, without doubt, one of the finest books I have had the pleasure of reading. Belinda Kroll writes with such fluidity in a style that is reminiscent of classic authors like Jane Austen. I was swept into the story from the very first page and I found it difficult to put down, often staying up late into the night to complete 'just a few more chapters'. I was not disappointed at any stage within the book, it flowed beautifully, making me feel that I didn't want it to end." - Suzy Turner---If you love Amanda Quick, Mary Jo Putney, Deanna Raybourn, and Victoria Holt, you will love HAUNTING MISS TRENTWOOD!Mary Trentwood is horrified when she watches her father crawl from his grave the day of his funeral. Mistaking the newly-arrived Alexander Hartwell to be her father's solicitor, Mary welcomes him into her home, not realizing he hunts a blackmailer. Why is Trentwood's ghost determined to make everyone think Mary is insane? Why is Hartwell snooping around Mary's home rather than looking over Trentwood's papers? Who is the blackmailer, and what are they doing in Mary's home?

The Haunted House of 1859 by Charles Dickens,Elizabeth Gaskell,Varla Ventura Summary

Varla Ventura, Coast to Coast favorite, Weird News blogger on Huffington Post, and author of The Book of the Bizarre and Beyond Bizarre, introduces Weiser Books’ new Collection of forgotten occult classics. Paranormal Parlor is an eerie assemblage of affordable digital editions, curated with Varla’s sixth sense for tales of the weird and unusual. In the 1859 Christmas edition of his regular publication, All Year Round, Charles Dickens solicited his favorite authors to take up residence in his Haunted House. With an introductory story by Dickens (The Mortals in the House) each author writes from the point of view of the ghost residing in a room. On the Twelfth Night of Christmas, a night believed to hold supernatural powers, the ghost begin to speak. Adelaide Anne Procter, who was Queen Victoria’s favorite poet, delivers the tale of “The Ghost in the Picture Room” entirely in rhyming verse. Wilkie Collins, a lifelong friend of Dickens and a well known author and playwright, delights with his nautical story of “The Ghost in the Cupboard Room.” And Elizabeth Gaskell, in the longest of the stories in the collection, paints a vivid portrait of the ghost of a judge in “The Ghost in the Garden Room.” For any lover of Dickens, Gaskell, or even just a good ghost story, this unique collection will warm the heart and chill the bones.

The Haunting of Hip Hop by Bertice Berry Summary

A ghost story with a beat . . . Bertice Berry follows her finely pitched Blackboard bestselling debut novel, Redemption Song, with a mesmerizing cautionary tale about urban hip hop culture. In ancient West Africa, the drum was more than a musical instrument, it was a vehicle of communication–it conveyed information, told stories, and passed on the wisdom of generations. The magic of the drum remains alive today, and with her magnificent second novel, Berry brings those powerful beats to the streets of Harlem. Harry “Freedom” Hudson is the hottest hip hop producer in New York City, earning unbelievable fees for his tunes and the innovative sound that puts his artists on the top of the charts. Harry is used to getting what he wants, so when he’s irresistibly drawn to a house in Harlem, he assumes he’ll be moving in as soon as the papers can be drawn up. The house, after all, has been abandoned for years. Or has it? Rumors are rife in the neighborhood that the house is haunted; that mysterious music, shouts, and sobbing can be heard late at night. Ava, Harry’s strong-willed, no-nonsense agent, dismisses it all as “old folks” tales–until she opens the door and finds an eerie, silent group of black people, young and old, gathered around a man holding an ancient African drum. They are waiting for Harry and bear a warning that touches his very soul: “We gave the drum back to your generation in the form of rap, but it’s being used to send the wrong message.” The Haunting of Hip Hop is a reminder of the importance of honoring the past as a means of moving safely and firmly into the future. It is sure to raise eyebrows and stir up controversy about the impact, good and bad, of rap culture.

Haunting and the Educational Imagination by Barbara Regenspan Summary

In a time when it seems like we've run into the limits on what Marx, Dewey, and Freud might hold for liberatory critique, this peculiarly uplifting book seeks to identify some promising thinking and teaching practices, especially for work in our contemporary “corporate university of excellence.” With auto-ethnography as a baseline for reflection on her personal teaching life in this troubling political era, as well as an insistence that all students are future teachers whether they seek formal work in classrooms or not, Barbara Regenspan selects insights descending from her horribly imperfect trinity (Marx, Dewey, and Freud), to revaluate what it means to have “obligations to unknowable others” in our complex and global reality. Drawing on an interdisciplinary cast of contemporary social theorists such as Avery Gordon, Deborah Britzman, Maxine Greene, Bill Readings, and Alain Badiou, this book traces hauntagogical thinking and related classroom practice–hauntagogy–pedagogy aimed to create wide-awakeness through the unearthing of acts of historical and interpersonal hauntings. Balanced between critique and hope, Regenspan offers the field of Educational Studies including teacher education, but also higher education more generally, a way of conceiving of the classroom as a place where contradictions in discourses are mined with and for our students who will be future teachers in the formal or informal sense. Here is a view of what historical materialism might hold for the relationship between democracy and education and what that relationship means for new, wild, conceptions of self, politics, and spirituality. “Barbara Regenspan combines the personal, the political, and the educational in creative ways in this volume. In the process, she provides a number of important insights into the human complexities and necessary commitments involved in struggling toward an education that is worthy of its name.” – Michael W. Apple, John Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies, University of Wisconsin, Madison and author of Can Education Change Society? “So much of my experience as an American teacher fell into place while reading this book. Regenspan never veers far from the pragmatic and personal realities of being an American educator right now, grappling with indifference, short-sightedness and disillusionment of the system. Her deft, and often profound intellectual work is peppered with anecdotes, both personal and pedagogical, and these accounts of teaching and learning on the ground level make her case fierce and fresh. Haunting and the Educational Imagination is politically humane and intellectually electrifying.” – Tony Hoagland, Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Houston, National Book Award Finalist, teacher of high school English teachers, and author of Unincorporated Persons in the Late Honda Dynasty. Included are: "Seer," "O Goat-Foot God of Arcady!," "Chacun sa goule," "The Haunted Bookshop," "Beyond Bliss," "All You Inherit," "The Will," "Danny's Inferno," "Can't Live Without You," "Community Service," and "Denial." The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne Summary

A family burdened by the sins of their forebears seeks redemption in this Gothic masterpiece from one of the most influential voices in American literature In a small New England town, the haunted halls of Pyncheon House trap its current owners—Hepzibah Pyncheon and her brother, Clifford—in an atmosphere of gloom and despair. Two hundred years ago, their ancestor seized the property from a man sentenced to death for practicing witchcraft. At his execution, the man placed a curse on the Pyncheons, and the family has been plagued by tragedy ever since. Enlivened by the arrival of Phoebe, a pretty young relative who begins a tentative romance with Holgrave, their mysterious attic lodger, Hepzibah and Clifford hope that the curse has finally lifted. But before a new day can dawn, they must first contend with Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon, whose greed and treachery threaten to doom the family forevermore. Inspired by the role his ancestors played in the Salem witch trials, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The House of the Seven Gables to explore the complicated legacy of the Puritans. First published in 1851, his savage indictment of the darkness at the heart of the American dream is more powerful than ever. Galilee by D. L. Tracey Summary

Galilee is an American psychological thriller horror novel written by D.L. Tracey. It was first published by iUniverse publishers in December 2009, and then was re-published in 2021 by AuthorHouse publishers. The novel’s narrative is based on the relationship of its four main characters – the newly ordained young priest, Father Hickey, fresh out of seven very long years of seminary school. Young, overachieving, and ambitious priest is sent to a backwater parish--and to make matters even worse, the priest he will replace dies just before he gets there, throwing him into a strange situation with no guidance. The small parish The Church of Saint Peter at the edge of a fishing village was not what he hoped for as his first assignment. The young priest meets Michael McDonough, owner of The Crow’s Nest bar, while administering last rites to a fisherman on the docks of Galilee on his first day at the parish, and a friendship mentorship begins without the priest’s knowledge. A young waitress at the Crow’s Nest by the name of Janie befriends the young priest and allows him into her troubled past. The fourth person is Father Gilday, the priest who died a few days before the young priest’s arrival. Galilee is a story about the horror that can befall a fishing village when no one is piecing together the signs!

The Grub-and-Stakers House a Haunt by Charlotte MacLeod Summary

A widowed gardener meets a ghost from frontier times who’s out for revenge: “The screwball mystery is Charlotte MacLeod’s cup of tea” (Chicago Tribune). Zilla Trott is pouring her cat some chamomile tea when the drifter appears in her kitchen. He is grubby and crude—not at all the kind of person you’d usually find in the pleasant town of Lobelia Falls—but something about him intrigues the aging widow. Perhaps it’s his rugged good looks, or the way he seems to come from another time and place. Or perhaps it’s the fact that he’s been dead for nearly a century. When Lobelia Falls was in its rough-and-tumble frontier infancy, Hiram Jellyby was the best mule driver the town had ever seen, until an argument over a hidden cache of gold left him bleeding to death in a back alley. He returns in spectral form to secure a proper burial, and finds that in modern-day Lobelia Falls, no one knows more about turning the soil than Zilla Trott’s gardening buddies—all members of Dittany Monk’s fearless Grub-and-Stake Gardening and Roving Club.
