How to Change the World in 12 Easy Steps by Peggy Porter Tierney Summary

Kids teaching kids how to make the world happier, prettier, friendlier, kinder, safer, smarter, accepting, and loving. It’s easy! HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD IN 12 EASY STEPS was inspired by Eva Kor, a child survivor of Auschwitz. She always stressed to young audiences that even though a child, they had the power to change the world. Easy, simple gestures from picking up a piece of trash on the sidewalk, tidying a bedroom, accepting someone who is different, along with other gestures of kindness and thoughtfulness can make a big difference. The book could also serve as a starting point for a conversation on prejudice. Marie Letourneau’s illustrations capture the warmth at the heart of this book, making it a fun, but life-changing read.

The Bookweaver's Daughter by Kannan Summary

The Bookweaver’s Daughter is an #OwnVoices YA fantasy—a tale of magic, Indian lore, and radical female friendship, written by debut author, Malavika Kannan, when she was 17 year old. Malavika is an Indian-American novelist, feminist writer, and political activist raised in the suburbs of Central Florida and currently a freshman at Stanford University. In the ancient Indian kingdom of Kasmira, stories don’t begin with “once upon a time.” Instead, Kasmiris start a woman’s story with those who came before her: her parents, grandparents, ancestors. For fourteen-year-old Reya Kandhari, her story always starts the same: with the fabled line of Bookweavers, tracing centuries back to the lost Yogis—the mythical guardians of Kasmiri culture who created the world itself. As a result, Reya’s entire life has been shaped by words. Words of mystique and mythology. Words of magic that allow her father, the Bookweaver, to bring his stories to life. Words of power that make him the target of tyrants who will stop at nothing to destroy magic in Kasmira. Living in disguise as a peasant in the fields, Reya’s sole focus is protecting the Bookweaver’s secret. But when her father is taken, Reya must flee deep into the jungle, alone with her best friend Nina and one ancient book. Grappling with Reya’s newfound magic, the two girls find themselves in the center of a war of liberation where magic reigns unchecked, and destiny takes a dark turn. As the stakes get higher, Reya realizes that her father’s legacy contains more power than she ever imagined. For Reya Kandhari is more than just a fugitive—she is a symbol of revolution. And that makes her a threat. In a tale of magic, Indian lore, and radical female friendship, Reya must pass the final test: the Bookweaver’s daughter must weave her own destiny. The fate of Kasmira depends on it.

TANGLEWOOD TALES - 6 Illustrated Greek Myths Rewritten for Children by Anon E. Mouse Summary

Herein are 6 richly illustrated tales, or rather, Greek Myths rewritten for children. The book includes the myths of: Theseus and the Minotaur (Chapter : "The Minotaur") Antaeus and the Pygmies (Chapter: "The Pygmies") Dragon's Teeth (Chapter: "The Dragon's Teeth") Circe's Palace (Chapter: "Circe's Palace") Proserpina, Ceres, Pluto, and the Pomegranate Seed (Chapter: "The Pomegranate Seed") Jason and the Golden Fleece (Chapter: "The Golden Fleece") Hawthorne wrote this book while renting a small cottage in the Berkshires, a vacation area in Massachusetts for industrialists during the Gilded Age. The owner of the cottage, a railroad baron, renamed the cottage "Tanglewood" in honour of the book having been written there. Later, a nearby mansion was renamed Tanglewood, where outdoor classical concerts were held, which became a Berkshire summer tradition. Ironically, Hawthorne hated living in the Berkshires. The Tanglewood neighbourhood of Houston was also named after the book. The book was a favourite of Mary Catherine Farrington, the daughter of Tanglewood developer William Farrington. It also reportedly inspired the name of the thickly wooded Tanglewood Island in the state of Washington. Not a bad legacy for a book of Greek myths rewritten for children…..! =========== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Children’s stories, Children’s Books, Folklore, Fairy, Folk, Tales, bedtime story, legends, storyteller, fables, moral tales, myths, happiness, laughter, greek, Theseus, Minotaur, Antaeus, Pygmies, Dragon's Teeth, Circe's Palace, Proserpina, Ceres, Pluto, Pomegranate Seeds, Jason, Golden Fleece, , Æetes, Ægeus, Æthra, Agenor, Antæus, Argonauts, Ariadne, Athens, banquet, beautiful, brave, bull, Cadmus, cavern, Cerberus, Ceres, Chiron, Cilix, Circe, Colchis, companions, comrades, creatures, Crete, dragon, earth, enchanted, enchantress, Europa, Eurylochus, flowers, galley, Giant, goblet, Golden, gormandizers, gown, Hecate, Hercules, heroes, Iolchos, island, Jason, King, kingdom, labyrinth, little, magic, magnificent, maidens, marble, Medea, Minos, Minotaur, monster, Mother, nymphs, Orpheus, palace, peacock, Pelias, Phœbus, Phœnix, Pluto, pomegranate, Prince, Proserpina, Pygmies, Pygmy, Queen, quest, Quicksilver, royal, scepter, sorrow, spear, strength, Strong, sun, sword, Telephassa, Thasus, Theseus, thousand, three-headed, throne, Ulysses, vessel, victory, voyagers, water, white, wicked, world

AS THE GOOSE FLIES - A Magical Children's Adventure Story by Katharine Pyle Summary

“As the Goose Flies” written and illustrated by Katherine Pyle. Ellen stood at the nursery window looking out at the gray sky and the wet, blowing branches of the trees. It had been raining and blowing all day. The roof pipes poured out steady waterfalls; the lilacs bent over, heavy with the rain. Up in the sky a bird was trying to beat its way home against the wind. But Ellen was not thinking of any of these things. She was thinking of the story that her grandmother had forgotten again. Ellen's grandmother was very old; so old that she often called Ellen by the names of her own little children; children who had grown up or died years and years ago. She was so old she could remember things that had happened seventy years before, but then she forgot a great many things, even things that had occurred only a few minutes before. While she stood there it occurred to her that she should put the bookcase in order before she went down to the sewing-room. That was just the thing to do on a rainy day. So, she sat down before the shelves and began pulling the books out. The nursery walls were covered with a flowered paper, and when Ellen had almost emptied the shelves she noticed that the paper back of them was of a different color from that of the rest of the room. It had not faded. The blue color between the vines looked soft and cloudlike, too, and almost as though it would melt away at a touch. Ellen put her hand back to feel it. Instead of touching a hard, cold wall as she had expected, her hand went right through between the vines as though there were nothing there. Ellen rose to her knees and put both hands across the shelf. She found she could draw the vines aside just as though they were real. She even thought she caught a glimpse of skies and trees between them. In haste she sprang to her feet and pushed the bookcase to one side so that she could squeeze in behind it. She caught hold of the wall-paper vines and drew them aside, and then she stepped right through the wall and into the world beyond. And so begins Ellen’s adventure into a mysterious and magical “World Beyond”. But, just what was in the world beyond? Well, you’ll just have to download and read this book to find out for yourself! ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: As the Goose Flies, Katharine Pyle, Aladdin, animals, Anne, beautiful, cage, castle, cave, child, doorway, dragon, dwarf, Ellen, Fairy, Fatima, forest, frightened, gander, gate-keeper, genie, giant, girl, goat, gold, Goldenhair, Goose, grandmother, long hair, harp, heart, horn, huntsman, Jack, journey, king, lamp, locks, magic, magical, Middling, Mistress, mother, Mother, pleasant, porridge, prince, princess, queen, Queerbodies, rhyme, scullery, seven, shadows, shapes, silk, Sister, slaves, Snowdrop, soldiers, evil stepmother, story, Suddenly, terrible, Thumbie, treasures, trees, tremble, underground, vines, water, whispered, wicked, window, wings, wolf, wonder, wondercluff, wooden, world

The Magic Box by Rob Young Summary

A riveting journey into the psyche of Britain through its golden age of television and film; a cross-genre feast of moving pictures, from classics to occult hidden gems, The Magic Box is the nation's visual self-portrait in technicolour detail. 'The definition of gripping. Truly, a trove of wyrd treasures.' BENJAMIN MYERS 'A feat of argument, description and affection.' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Highly entertaining . . . [A] fabulous treasure trove.' SCOTSMAN 'Young is a phenomonal scholar.' OBSERVER Growing up in the 1970s, Rob Young's main storyteller was the wooden box with the glass window in the corner of the family living room, otherwise known as the TV set. Before the age of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, YouTube and commercial streaming services, watching television was a vastly different experience. You switched on, you sat back and you watched. There was no pause or fast-forward button. The cross-genre feast of moving pictures produced in Britain between the late 1950s and late 1980s - from Quatermass and Tom Jones to The Wicker Man and Brideshead Revisited, from A Canterbury Tale and The Go-Between to Bagpuss and Children of the Stones, and from John Betjeman's travelogues to ghost stories at Christmas - contributed to a national conversation and collective memory. British-made sci-fi, folk horror, period drama and televisual grand tours played out tensions between the past and the present, dramatised the fractures and injustices in society and acted as a portal for magical and ghostly visions. In The Magic Box, Rob Young takes us on a fascinating journey into this influential golden age of screen and discovers what it reveals about the nature and character of Britain, its uncategorisable people and buried histories - and how its presence can still be felt on screen in the twenty-first century.

On the Road and Off the Record with Leonard Bernstein by Charlie Harmon Summary

Celebrating Leonard Bernstein's centenary with an intimate and detailed look at the public and private life of the Maestro written by his former assistant. Foreword by Broadway legend Harold Prince. "An affectionate portrait of an eminent musician who was driven by demons." —Kirkus Reviews "Harmon’s personable and warm account of what it was like to work for one of the twentieth century’s musical giants casts new light on Bernstein and his world." —Booklist "This multifaceted perspective gives readers plenty of salacious gossip paired with insight into Leonard Bernstein’s remarkable artistic achievements later in life." —Library Journal On the Road is a colorfully written, unforgettably entertaining and unputdownable book, and is available just in time for LB’s 100th birthday. Unreservedly recommended. —Fanfare Magazine Leonard Bernstein reeked of cheap cologne and obviously hadn't showered, shaved, or slept in a while. Was he drunk to boot? He greeted his new assistant with "What are you drinking?" Yes, he was drunk. Charlie Harmon was hired to manage the day-to-day parts of Bernstein's life. There was one additional responsibility: make sure Bernstein met the deadline for an opera commission. But things kept getting in the way: the centenary of Igor Stravinsky, intestinal parasites picked up in Mexico, teaching all summer in Los Angeles, a baker's dozen of young men, plus depression, exhaustion, insomnia, and cut-throat games of anagrams. Did the opera get written? For four years, Charlie saw Bernstein every day, as his social director, gatekeeper, valet, music copyist, and itinerant orchestra librarian. He packed (and unpacked) Bernstein's umpteen pieces of luggage, got the Maestro to his concerts, kept him occupied changing planes in Zurich, Anchorage, Tokyo, or Madrid, and learned how to make small talk with mayors, ambassadors, a chancellor, a queen, and a Hollywood legend or two. How could anyone absorb all those people and places? Because there was music: late-night piano duets, or the Maestro's command to accompany an audition, or, by the way, the greatest orchestras in the world. Charlie did it, and this is what it was like, told for the first time.

The Achilles Effect by Crystal Smith Summary

A discussion of pop culture messages about masculinity, their impact on boys, and the benefits of introducing more gender balance to boys lives. When most people think about gender stereotypes and children, they envision princesses, dolls, and pink clothing. Few consider the warriors, muscle-bound action figures, and T-shirts covered in graffiti and skulls that are assumed to signify masculinity. The pop culture environment that surrounds boys introduces them to a world where traditionally masculine traitslike toughness, aggression, and stoicismare highly esteemed and where female influence is all but absent. The Achilles Effect explores gender bias in the entertainment aimed at primary school boys, focusing on the dominant themes in childrens TV shows, toy advertising, movies, and books: gender stereotypes of both sexes, male dominance, negative portrayals of fathers, breaking of the mother/son bond, and the devaluing of femininity. It examines the gender messages sent by pop culture, provides strategies for countering these messages, and encourages discussion of a vitally important issue that is rarely talked aboutboys and their often skewed understanding of gender. The Achilles Effect is a guide for parents, educators, and students who want to learn more about male and female stereotypes, their continued strong presence in kids pop culture, and their effect on young boys.
