A real estate mogul who lost everything. A return to the Florida Keys. Her first love and all the problems she left behind twenty-five years ago—await her. Holly Archer’s husband ruined her life. While they made their fortune in Miami real estate, he took a mistress and managed to make enough illegal dealings to absolutely destroy them forever. Now, Holly’s lost her real estate license, her house, her husband, her friends, and her life. But Islamorada calls. It’s a sunny, white-sand strip of life and love and sun in the Florida Keys, where she grew up with her three siblings, Randy, Rina, and Amy—all of whom she’s lost touch with over the past twenty-five years. Now, two years after the death of their father, the Archer House, the Inn where the four of them grew up, is dilapidated and has a financial bleed that she can’t put her finger on; their mother has fallen into an intense depression and Holly finds a place where someone in the world actually needs her help. It’s also a good place to hide in the wake of what her husband did, a place to pretend her life didn’t crumble into nothing. But patching up the Archer family won’t be easy. Her brother, Randy, is the only sibling who remains in the Keys, and his love for alcohol keeps him isolated and unwilling to help out. Their other sisters hardly answer the phone. Even as Holly digs in her heels, she creates conflict between herself and her own children, the people she loves the most. All the while, her old high school boyfriend is a mainstay on the island. He’s a cop and, as news of Holly’s husband’s illegal dealings surface in Miami, perhaps he’s one of the only people she can trust in the world. Secrets unravel in this first installment in the Archer Family Series. Lose yourself in this new women's fiction series that revolves around friendship, love and loss among the Archer Clan. The Archer by Shruti Swamy Summary

“Set in 1970s Bombay, the novel explores art, ambition, gender roles and class with the same shimmering prose of Swamy’s first book, the story collection A House Is a Body.” —San Francisco Chronicle “[A] sublime, boundary-pushing exploration of sexuality, creativity, and love.” —NPR In this transfixing novel, a young woman comes of age in 1960s- and 1970s-era Bombay, a vanished world that is complex and indelibly rendered. Vidya’s childhood is marked by the shattering absence and then the bewildering reappearance of her mother and baby brother at the family home. Restless, observant, and longing for connection with her brilliant and increasingly troubled mother, Vidya navigates the stifling expectations of her life with a vivid imagination until one day she peeks into a classroom where girls are learning kathak, a dazzling, centuries-old dance form that requires the utmost discipline and focus. Her pursuit of artistic transcendence through kathak soon becomes the organizing principle of her life, even as she leaves home for college and falls in complicated love with her best friend. As the uncertain future looms, she must ultimately confront the tensions between romantic love, her art, and the legacy of her own imperfect mother. Lyrical and deeply sensual, with writing as mesmerizing as kathak itself, Shruti Swamy’s The Archer is a bold portrait of a singular woman coming of age as an artist—navigating desire, duty, and the limits of the body. It is also an electrifying and utterly immersive story about the transformative power of art, and the possibilities that love can open when we’re ready.

Devil's Rooming House by M. William Phelps Summary

The gripping tale of a legendary, century-old murder spree *** A silent, simmering killer terrorized New England in1911. As a terrible heat wave killed more than 2,000 people, another silent killer began her own murderous spree. That year a reporter for the Hartford Courant noticed a sharp rise in the number of obituaries for residents of a rooming house in Windsor, Connecticut, and began to suspect who was responsible: Amy Archer-Gilligan, who’d opened the Archer Home for Elderly People and Chronic Invalids four years earlier. “Sister Amy” would be accused of murdering both of her husbands and up to sixty-six of her patients with cocktails of lemonade and arsenic; her story inspired the Broadway hit Arsenic and Old Lace. The Devil’s Rooming House is the first book about the life, times, and crimes of America’s most prolific female serial killer. In telling this fascinating story, M. William Phelps also paints a vivid portrait of early-twentieth-century New England.

Killer Women by Nigel Cawthorne Summary

The Chilling Inside Story of Women Who Are Driven to Kill Killer Women are the most disturbing yet compelling of all criminals, representing the very darkest side of humanity and subverting the conventional view of women as the weaker sex. From Elizabeth Bathory, 'The Bloody Countess' whose vampire-like tendencies terrorised sixteenth-century Hungary, to the Moors Murderer Myra Hindley and the Florida Highway Killer Aileen Wuornos, these women transfix us with their extreme ability to commit savage acts of cruelty and depravity. Most chilling is the fact that many of their victims represent the most vulnerable in society: babies, the ill and infirm, and the elderly. In some cases their methods of disposing of the corpses fall nothing short of ingenious: meet Leonarda Cianciulli, 'The Soap-Maker of Correggio', who used the fat from her victims' bodies to make soap and teacakes to sell to unsuspecting customers. These killers' backgrounds, methods and their crimes are described in forensic and gripping detail. 50 terrifying cases of killer women are brought to life, including: Elizabeth Bathory 'The Bloody Countess' Amelia Dyer, The Reading Baby Farmer Jane Toppan, 'Jolly Jane' Juana Barraza, The Old Lady Killer Leonarda Cianciulli, 'The Soap-Maker of Correggio' Bonnie Parker, 'Bonnie & Clyde' Rosemary West Myra Hindley Aileen Wuornos

RUSSIAN FAIRY TALES FROM THE SKAZKI OF POLEVOI - 24 Russian Fairy Tales by Anon E. Mouse Summary

The existence of the Russian Skazki or Märchen (Stories, Folklore or Fairy Tales) was first made generally known to the British Public in about 1880 by William Ralston in his Russian Folk Tales. A year after the appearance of Ralston's book, the eminent Russian historian and archæologist, Peter Nikolaevich Polevoi selected, from the inexhaustible stores of Afanasiev, some three dozen of the Skazki (stories) most suitable for children, and worked them up into a fairy tale book which was published at St. Petersburg in 1874, under the title of Narodnuiya Russkiya Skazki (Popular Russian Stories). To manipulate these quaintly vigorous old world stories for nursery purposes was, no easy task, but, on the whole, M. Polevoi did his work excellently well, softening the crudities and smoothing out the occasional roughness, turning these charming stories into entirely readable stories for children. It is from the first Russian edition of M. Polevoi's book that the following selection of 24 Russian stories has been made. With the single exception of "Morozko," a variant of which may be familiar to those who know Mr. Ralston's volume. Some of the stories in this volume are: The Golden Mountain Morozko The Flying Ship The Story of the Tsarevich Ivan, and of The Harp that Harped Without A Harper The Story of Gore-Gorinskoe Go I Know Not Whither—Fetch I Know Not What Kuz’ma Skorobogaty The Tsarevna Loveliness-Inexhaustible Verlioka; and many more. As to the merits of these Skazki, they must be left to speak for themselves. So, we invite you to down this book of 24 unique Russian Fairy Tales and curl up in a comfy chair with a mug for of steaming hot chocolate and be whisked away to a country that is still as mysterious as it is large. 10% of the profit from the sale of this eBook will be donated to charities. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Russian, Russia, Skazki, Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, folk tales, story, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, culture, cultural, golden mountain, morozko, flying ship, muzhichek, big as your thumb, moustaches, seven versts, long, tsarevich ivan, harp gore gorinskoe, go, fetch, kuz’ma, Kuzma, skorobogaty, tsarevna, loveliness, inexhaustible, verlioka, frog, tsarevna, two sons, ivan, soldier, woman, accuser, Thomas, berennikov, white duck, little fool, little feather, fenist, bright falcon, peasant, demyan, enchanted, ring, brave, labourer, sage, damsel, prophetic, dream, two out, knapsack, marko the rich, vasily the luckless, R, Nisbet Bain, C. The Sumter Flying Artillery by James Speicher Summary

"The heroism of the men in the Eleventh Battalion Georgia Light Artillery is a story that needs to be told." -Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States "Unique photographs and thorough individual war service record briefs make this book valuable as a research tool for personal, school, and public libraries alike."-Ben C. Sewell III, executive director, Sons of Confederate Veterans Beginning with Georgia's decision to secede from the union, author James L. Speicher chronicles the history of the little-known battalion that bravely fought for the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865. With more than eight hundred members serving at various points during the Civil War, most men in the unit, many of whom died on the battlefield, were from Sumter County, Georgia. Speicher details the horrific conditions they faced during their clashes, including the battle at Dranesville, which resulted in the most bloodshed experienced by the unit. Diary entries and personal letters, provided by descendants of the soldiers, illustrate daily life during the war. Rather than analyze the underlying causes of the war, the author focuses on the men who endured it, the men of the Sumter Flying Artillery. Speicher's scope includes Allen Sherrod Cutts, the battery's first commander and most prominent member. This remarkable man received personal congratulations from Gen. Robert E. Lee for leading his battalion to safety during the deadly battle of South Mountain in 1862. Highlights include pictures of the men before they left for battle, portraits of the Confederates in uniform, and images of the unit's flag. Appendixes provide a full roster listing each member's name, rank, and enlistment date, along with a section detailing the organization of the unit and the specific cannon used by the Sumter Battalion. With maps illustrating the position of the battery during specific battles, such as Gettysburg, and information on each officer, this book is an asset to genealogists and students of the Civil War. ABOUT THE AUTHORJames L. Speicher served in the U.S. Army for thirty years. He is a life member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Missouri's Civil War Heritage Foundation, among other organizations. After earning his B.A. in history from the Citadel, he obtained an A.A.S. in law enforcement from Oakland Community College and advanced degrees from Wayne State University and Webster University. Speicher resides in Shawnee, Kansas, with his wife.

Finalist for the 2021 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction “A House Is a Body will not simply be talked about as one of the greatest short story collections of the 2020s; it will change the way all stories—short and long—are told, written, and consumed. There is nothing, no emotion, no tiny morsel of memory, no touch, that this book does not take seriously. Yet, A House Is a Body might be the most fun I’ve ever had in a short story collection.” —Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy Dreams collide with reality, modernity with antiquity, and myth with identity in the twelve arresting stories of A House Is a Body. Set in the United States and India, Swamy’s characters grapple with motherhood, relationships, and their bodies to reveal small but intense internal moments of beauty, pain, and power that contain the world. In “Earthly Pleasures,” a young painter living alone in San Francisco begins a secret romance with one of India’s biggest celebrities, and desire and ego are laid bare. In “A Simple Composition,” a husband’s professional crisis leads to his wife’s discovery of a dark, ecstatic joy. And in the title story, an exhausted mother watches, hypnotized by fear, as a California wildfire approaches her home. Immersive and assured, provocative and probing, these are stories written with the edge and precision of a knife blade. A House Is a Body introduces a bold and original voice in fiction, from a writer at the start of a stellar career. Don't miss Shruti Swamy's debut novel, The Archer (available September 7, 2021), which has already been longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize.

The End of Gay by Bert Archer Summary

Gay is a phase. Not something people go through in adolescence, but, like feminism, a cultural, historical movement, on the way to something bigger. Through the prism of his own sexual past and present, with a wide array of references to pop culture, literature and history, Archer traces the rise and imminent fall of gay. Along the way, he cites historical examples of greater sexual liberation, embracing the lessons of these precedents as models for our own less inhibited times. Celebrating art that expresses love and passion unfettered by gender, Archer claims Shakespeare and Prince, Goethe and Madonna, as icons for a new, more open age of sex. Stimulating, engaging and entertaining, The End of Gay is a bold work that looks forward to the vast possibilities of love without labels.

Gregory & Catherine by Sarah J.K. Bailey Summary

Blurb Gregory Lockwood is a man tormented by the thought of falling in love. After realizing that he cannot continue to run away from his fear, he decides that he needs to abandon the notion of love altogether, and pursue a marriage that will keep him from thoughts he deems frivolous. Catherine Archer is the exact opposite; a romantic who envisions meeting her one true love and living happily ever after, she is soon challenged by the realities of life, and finds that one must make do with what one has. When Gregory and Catherine meet, their attraction for each other is undeniable, though they deny it by using their predetermined ideas of what is best for each other. That, however, is nothing compared to the fact that Violet, Catherine’s younger sister, is expecting a proposal from Gregory, and she faces being betrayed by both the Duke and her beloved sister when finding out that they have both fallen in love.
