The Astrologer's Guide by , Summary

[T]o judge of things to come, is no easy task, nor indeed can it always be exactly performed; but we may come near the truth, and differ from it only in some small time or circumstance; which difficulty should not at all discourage us from studying and endeavouring to obtain as great a knowledge therein, as Human minds are capable of...-from "Henry Coley's Address to the Reader"The provenance of this charming little book is as delightfully convoluted as the discipline it offers guidance in. In the 13th century, Italian mystic Guido Bonatus set down in writing his 146 "considerations," or guides for interpreting astrological signs. In 1675, British astrologers Henry Coley and William Lilly published a translated version of Bonatus, along with a selection of oracular advice from "Jerom Cardan of Milan" in the same volume. And then, in 1886, William C. Eldon Serjeant, fellow of the British Theosophical Society, republished that 1675 work and added his own notes and preface. The layers of history in this work-which is still used by astrologers today-makes it a particularly curious document of the medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian eras all at once.

When he is in search of refuge, Guy Mannering, a colonel of an Indian army, decides to spend the night at the home of Godfrey Bertram, the Laird of Ellangowan. Despite being a generous and friendly host, the Laird’s attention is focused on his wife instead of his guest, as his first child is soon to be born. As Lady Betram goes into labor giving birth to a healthy boy named Harry, a psychic arrives to form a prophecy, though the woman is undermined by another guest. During his visit, Mannering meets a socially inept tutor, Dominie Sampson, who insists on predicting the child’s future based on a reading of the stars, in addition to the psychic’s prediction. However, when Sampson discovers that his prediction is quite alarming, he seals it an envelope for Godfrey and Lady Betram to read when the child turns five. But when tragedy strikes right before Harry’s fifth birthday it is apparent that the prophecy should have been heeded much earlier. While in the care of a customs officer, Harry is the accidental witness of a murder, leading to his abduction, and the dawn of the prophecy’s unfolding. Tales of The Alhambra by Irving Washington Summary

Tales of the Alhambra by an American writer of the Romantic period, Washington Irving is a collection of novellas, essays and travel notes that are dedicated to Alhambra, a famous Moorish palace in Granada. Soon after finishing a biography of Columbus (1828), Irving moved from Madrid, where he had been living, to the south of the peninsula – Granada. He was preparing a book called A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada about the years 1478–1492, and was researching the topic. He asked the then-governor of the historic Alhambra Palace as well as the archbishop of Granada for access to the palace, which was granted because of Irving's celebrity status. He explored this place with the help of a 35-year-old guide named Mateo Ximenes, and was strongly impressed. He had been staying in the most half-ruined building for three months, collecting local legends and impressions that made the basis for the book called Tales of the Alhambra.

Drawing upon the archetypal perspectives of Mircea Eliade, James Hillman, and Thomas Moore, the author presents a truly psychological astrology, an astrology of soul that can plumb the depths of our being, sounding out our centers in a manner that enriches our struggle to fully engage what it means to be human.

Divination Pdf/ePub eBook Author: Patrick Curry

Divination by Patrick Curry Summary

Divination is any ritual and its associated tradition performed in order to ask a more-than-human intelligence for guidance. A universal human practice, it has received surprisingly little academic attention. This interdisciplinary collection by leading scholars in the field is dedicated to fascinating new insights into divination and oracles arising from recent work in anthropology, religious studies, history and classical studies. Central importance is given to the practical and theoretical perspectives of diviners as well as scholars of divination; several contributors are both. This book explores philosophical issues such as the nature of divinatory intelligence, the relationship between divinatory and metaphorical truth, the primacy of ontology over epistemology, the importance of reflexivity in scholarly studies of divination, and astrology as the principal Western form of divination. The ethnographic and historical examples range from contemporary Nigeria, urban Cuba, Mayan Guatemala and the shamanic cultures of the circumpolar Arctic to classical Greece and ancient Judea.
