ادبیات ادب یا ادبیات عبارت است از آن‌گونه سخنانی که از حدّ سخنان عادی، برتر و والاتر بوده است و مردم، آن سخنان را در میان خود، ضبط و نقل کرده‌اند و از خواندن و شنیدن آن‌ها دگرگون گشته و احساس غم، شادی یا لذّت کرده‌اند. در باور همگانی ادبیات یک تیره یا ملت برای نمونه مجموعه متن‌هایی است که آثار ماندگار و برجسته پیشینیان آن تیره و ملت را تشکیل می‌دهند. یکی از طبقه‌بندی‌های مشهور و پرکاربرد متن‌های ادبی، طبقه‌بندی دوگانه‌ایست که بر اساس آن متن‌ها به دو گونه‌ی اصلی شعر و نثر تقسیم می‌شوند. این طبقه‌بندی سنت دیرینه‌ای در سخن شناسی، زبان فارسی و ادبیات جهان دارد. سخنوران و فیلسوفان از دیرباز در پی پررنگ کردن خط ظریف میان این دو و ارایه تعریفی فراگیر و تمیزدهنده از شعر و نثر بوده‌اند. تعریف ادبیات ادب واژه‌ای است معرب از فارسی. این واژه از دیدگاه واژه‌شناسان به معنی ظرف و حسن تناول آمده‌است. برخی نیز در فارسی، ادب را به معنی فرهنگ ترجمه کرده‌اند و گفته‌اند که ادب یا فرهنگ همان دانش است. به از دیگر معانی واژة ادب می‌توان به هنر، حسن معاشرت، شیوة پسندیده، با سخن اشاره کرد؛ اما ادب در اصطلاح، نام دانشی است که قدما آن را شامل این علوم دانسته‌اند: لغت، صرف، نحو، معانی، بیان، بدیع، عروض، قافیه، قوانین خط، قوانین قرائت که بعضی اشتقاق و انشاء راهم بدان‌ها افزوده‌اند. البته دیدگاه ادبای قدیم دربارة معنی اصطلاحی «ادب» کمی مختلف است. بعضی آن را فضیلت اخلاقی، برخی پرهیز از انواع خطاها و برخی آن را مانند فرشته‌ای دانسته‌اند که صاحبش را از ناشایستی‌ها باز می‌دارد. اما علم ادب (ادبیات) یا سخن‌سنجی یا در دیدگاه پیشینیان اشاره داشته‌است به دانش آشنایی با نظم و نثر از جهت درستی و نادرستی و خوبی و بدی و مراتب آن. اما برخی ادیب را کسی می‌دانستند که عالم بر علوم نحو، لغت، صرف، معنی، بیان، عروض، قافیه و فروع باشد و برخی خط، قرض‌الشعر، انشا، محاضره و تاریخ را هم جزو آن‌ها دانسته‌اند. جرجی زیدان در این باره می‌نویسد: «علم ادب در اصطلاح علمای ادبیت مشتمل بر اکثر علوم ادبیه است از قبیل: نحو، لغت، تصریف، عروض، قوافی، صنعت شعر، تاریخ و انساب. و ادیب کسی است که دارای تمام این علوم یا یکی از آن‌ها باشد و فرق مابین ادیب و عالِم آن است که ادیب از هر چیزی بهتر و خوب‌ترش را انتخاب می‌نماید و عالم تنها یک مقصد را گرفته در آن مهارت می‌یابد.» مردم غالباً بین ادبیات و آثار مکتوب دیگر تفاوت قائل می‌شوند. اصطلاحات «تخیل ادبی» و «شایستگی ادبی» غالباً به منظور تشخیص آثار ادبی از یکدیگر مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرند. مثلاً تقریباً تمام انسان‌های باسواد دنیا آثار چارلز دیکنز را در زمرة «ادبیات» تلقی می‌کنند در حالی که برخی از منتقدین، آثار جفری آرچر را شایستة گنجانده شدن تحت عنوان «ادبیات انگلیسی» نمی‌دانند. گاهی اوقات ممکن است منتقدان برخی از آثار را به دلایلی همچون سطح پایین دستور زبان و نحو، داشتن خط داستانی باورنکردنی یا گسیخته و یا داشتن شخصیت‌های متناقض یا غیرقابل‌باور از زمرة آثار ادبی حذف کنند. اما باید گفت که مفهوم واژة ادب و ادبیات نیز همانند همة پدیده‌های دیگر در طول زمان یکسان نمانده و دستخوش تحول گردیده است. بیشتر اقوام قدیم جهان، هم‌چون یونیان، ادب را فقط به معنی و مفهوم شعر به کار می‌برده‌اند و علوم ادبی، نزد آنها علم شعر بوده است و بس.

Ihr schwaches Licht wirft verzerrte Schatten auf den Boden und in düstere Treppenhäuser, in den sich seltsame Gestalten bewegen. Man kann sich sicher sein, dass hier nichts Gutes passieren wird. Das ist die Welt des Film noir - eine Welt, deren Aura nicht gerade zum Wohlfühlen einlädt. Auch „die Figuren sind mehr oder minder widerlich, besonders schrecklich die Frauen“ , wie einst der französische Filmkritiker Jean-Pierre Chartier feststellte. Undurchsichtige Charaktere betrügen, morden und verstricken sich in kriminelle Abenteuer, während sie auf ein böses Ende zusteuern. Die bedrohliche und verworrene Welt des Film noir irritiert, übt aber auch gleichzeitig eine große Faszination aus, die bis heute nicht verloren gegangen ist. Besonders faszinierend sind die Frauen – wunderschöne, jedoch unmoralische und skrupellose Verführerinnen. Daher ist es für die vorliegende Arbeit von besonderem Interesse, die Darstellung der weiblichen Figuren im Film noir zu untersuchen. Im Folgenden werden die charakteristischen Frauenbilder porträtiert sowie ihre kennzeichnenden narrativen und visuellen Darstellungsweisen untersucht. Zunächst wird der Film noir im Allgemeinen beleuchtet. Nach einer kurzen Einführung werden sein Entwicklungsprozess sowie seine typischen Merkmale skizziert. Daran schließt sich die Betrachtung des Frauenbildes aus einer soziologisch-historischen Perspektive an. Danach werden seine kulturhistorischen und psychoanalytischen Aspekte berücksichtigt. Daraufhin werden die zentralen Frauentypen vorgestellt, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf ihre Funktion und visuelle Gestaltung im Film gelegt wird. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit wird die Repräsentation der Frau am Beispiel von dem Film Gilda aus dem Jahr 1946 verdeutlicht. Hierfür wird nach einer kurzen Wiedergabe des Filminhalts zunächst diskutiert, welchen Frauentypus die weibliche Hauptfigur Gilda vertritt und anhand ihrer visuellen Darstellung sowie narrativen Funktion begründet. Abschließend wird eine Schlüsselszene im Detail analysiert, um ein tieferes Verständnis für die weibliche Figur herzustellen.
