A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Summary

A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, usually known just as A Christmas Carol is a fairy-tale novel by a British classic Charles Dickens, that was published in 1843. It consists of five chapters, or staves as the author named them. Among all the stories from Christmas Books by Dickens this one became the most popular story about Christmas in Great Britain and outside the country. The main character is an old gloomy miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who doesn’t love anyone or anything except his money. He doesn’t understand why everybody is so happy about Christmas and with disgust, refuses the invitation from his kind nephew to celebrate this holiday together with his family. On Christmas Eve, the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley appeared in front of Scrooge, and it changed him drastically…

The Man Who Invented Christmas (Movie Tie-In) by Les Standiford Summary

As uplifting as the tale of Scrooge itself, this is the story of how Charles Dickens revived the signal holiday of the Western world—now a major motion picture. Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution. It was a harsh and dreary age, in desperate need of spiritual renewal, ready to embrace a book that ended with blessings for one and all. With warmth, wit, and an infusion of Christmas cheer, Les Standiford whisks us back to Victorian England, its most beloved storyteller, and the birth of the Christmas we know best. The Man Who Invented Christmas is a rich and satisfying read for Scrooges and sentimentalists alike.

Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva Summary

“A charming, comic, and ultimately poignant story about the creation of the most famous Christmas tale ever written. It’s as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it’s all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps.” —Anthony Doerr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All The Light We Cannot See Laced with humor, rich historical detail from Charles Dickens’ life, and clever winks to his work, Samantha Silva's Mr. Dickens and His Carol is an irresistible new take on a cherished classic. Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer’s block sets in. Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace in his great palace of thinking, the city of London itself. On one of his long night walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets the mysterious Eleanor Lovejoy, who might be just the muse he needs. As Dickens’ deadlines close in, Eleanor propels him on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambition, and love. The story he writes will change Christmas forever.

The Birds' Christmas Carol (With All the Original Illustrations) by Kate Douglas Wiggin Summary

The Birds' Christmas Carol is a touching story about Carol Bird, a Christmas-born child, who as a young girl is unusually loving and generous, having a positive effect on everyone with whom she comes into contact. She is the youngest member of her family and has devoted older brothers. At about the age of 5, Carol contracts an unspecified illness (possibly tuberculosis), and, by the time she is 10, she is bedridden. The novel primarily involves Carol making plans for a Christmas celebration for the nine Ruggles children, a poor, working-class family living near the Birds. The book is a wistful moral tale about a saintly child, but is enlivened by many humorous scenes, particularly those concerning the home life of the Ruggles family. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was an American educator and author of children's stories. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labour.

A Christmas carol in prose, being a ghost story of Christmas by Charles Dickens Summary

“A national benefit and to every man or woman who reads it, a personal kindness.” --William Makepeace Thackeray The Western world typically thinks of Christmas as having a singular origin, away in a manger, but when you look at how the holiday is celebrated today, it’s hard to see a more powerful progenitor than Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. First published on December 17, 1843 as a novella, the story bestowed on Christmas its rich and complicated social character. Ebenezer’s epic Christmas Eve illustrates both the joy to be found in friends, family, and festive gatherings... and the dangers of letting such happiness and privilege blind you to the lives of the less fortunate. The story is a product of its time, a response to the ills of Victorian-era industrialization and the desire for tradition, but you only need to look at how varied the adaptations of A Christmas Carol have become--on stage, in film, and in song--to know that it is truly timeless. This exclusive edition of A Christmas Carol in Prose: Being a Ghost Story of Christmas is one adaptation not to miss. It is a scanned volume of the original novella--complete with original spooky title--enhanced with new illustrations and narration by artist and musician Jon Langford. Here Langford imagines the story as a stage production put on by a small West Yorkshire theater in 1916. Download it for free to see--and hear--each of the four ghosts as an early 20th century audience might have.

Joy Born At Bethlehem: 19 Christmas Sermons from the Ministry of Charles Spurgeon by Charles Spurgeon Summary

Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers,” was very mindful of the need to avoid seeing Christmas as a merely religious holiday, open to commercialization and frivolity. Accordingly, throughout most of his extensive ministry he refused to alter his teaching schedule to fit in a “Christmas” sermon, as is so common today. Looking through Spurgeon’s vast teaching archive, we find only 19 instances in which special attention was given to the topic of Christmas. Spurgeon’s focus in these 19 sermons is overwhelmingly the who and why of Christmas. He marveled at the fact that God would send his only Son into the world for people who in no way deserved it. Christ came into the world to save sinners. That was Spurgeon’s focus 150 years ago. We need that message now more than ever. Joy to the world, the Lord has come!

Hard Times by Charles Dickens Summary

'Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else' Dickens's novel honouring the value of the human heart in an age of materialism centres on Coketown, where Mr Thomas Gradgrind, school owner and model of Utilitarian success, feeds his pupils and his family with facts, banning fancy and wonder from young minds. As a consequence his obedient daughter Louisa becomes trapped in a loveless marriage, and his son Tom rebels to become embroiled in crime. As their fortunes cross with those of a free-spirited circus girl and a victimized weaver, Gradgrind is forced to question everything he believes in.
