The Richest Man in Babylon Action Plan (Master Class Series) by Mitch Horowitz Summary

The Wealth Secrets of the Ancients: Updated for Today’s Challenges George S. Clason’s classic guide to financial health, The Richest Man in Babylon, has won millions of followers since 1930. Told as a series of parables set in ancient Mesopotamia, The Richest Man in Babylon is enthralling in its wisdom and simplicity. But times have changed. The enduring crisis of economic lockdown, spiraling health costs, and working from home were not even figments in the mind of this great author. Now, PEN Award-winning historian and popular voice of self-help Mitch Horowitz marries Clason’s insights to the challenges of our present-day financial lives to produce a profoundly realistic, practical, and relevant “action plan” based on the original principles of The Richest Man in Babylon. In seven steps—or “Clason’s Golden Lessons”—Mitch explores how to profit from your dwelling in our new work-from-home economy; the tough truth about healthcare costs and the original Babylon principles; the soundest source of investment; real-world ways to increase your earning power; why maintaining cashflow matters more than paying down debt in times of crisis; how to contend with issues of fear around money, and more. As a special bonus feature, this action plan includes a faithful abridgment of Clason's original work, which serves as a perfect refresher for longtime readers and a primer for newcomers. In this to-the-point guide, Mitch also explores the historical background of the man and book that taught us to “pay yourself first,” and why Clason’s basic rules still make the most sense. A selection of "Clason's Golden Aphorisms" distill key pieces of wisdom from the original book, each a lesson in itself. In succinct fashion, Mitch provides the first true update to one of the greatest financial guides ever written.

The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel Summary

Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Money—investing, personal finance, and business decisions—is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.

Internationally bestselling financial advisor David Bach’s Automatic Millionaire promotes a revolutionary system for making even the most undisciplined money managers rich. The Automatic Millionaire shows readers how to change their financial practices and even their lives, the simple and automatic way. The book begins with a powerful story about an average Canadian couple — he’s a low-level manager, she’s a beautician — whose joint income never exceeds $55,000 a year, yet who somehow manage to own two homes debt-free, put two kids through college, and retire at fifty-five with more than $1 million in savings. The incredible message Bach delivers is that the key to getting rich is “automating” the way to wealth by “paying yourself first,” using automatic funded retirement accounts and money market accounts to secure the future and pay for the present. A concise guide that’s a fixture on bestseller lists, The Automatic Millionaire introduces readers to a system that is powerful and simple — an automatically effective, life-changing system that delivers. Do it once, the rest is automatic.

Is the millionaire next door still out there today? The latest research from Dr. Thomas J. Stanley and his daughter, Dr. Sarah Stanley Fallaw, confirms that, yes, the millionaire next door is alive and well. The book examines wealth in America 20 years after Dr. Stanley’s groundbreaking work on self-made affluence. While a new generation of household financial managers are being inundated with the proliferation financial advice, The Next Millionaire Next Door provides readers with an analysis of what it takes to achieve wealth with data-based conclusions and evidence from those who have built wealth on their own over the last two decades. In this current work, the authors detail how specific decisions, behaviors, and characteristics align with the discipline of wealth building, covering areas such as consumption, budgeting, careers, investing, and financial management in general. Through case studies, survey research, and a careful examination of quantitative studies of wealth, the authors illustrate what it takes to achieve financial success today, regardless of market conditions or rising costs.

The Miracle Club by Mitch Horowitz Summary

A guide to creating miracles in your own life through the power of thought • Offers a concise, clear formula of focused exercises and concrete tools to lay out a specific path to manifest your deepest desires • Presents the first serious reconsideration of New Thought philosophy since the death of William James in 1910 • Draws on the work of New Thought pioneers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Napoleon Hill, Neville Goddard, William James, Andrew Jackson Davis, Wallace D. Wattles, and many others Following in the footsteps of a little-known group of esoteric seekers from the late-nineteenth century who called themselves “the Miracle Club,” Mitch Horowitz shows that the spiritual “wish fulfillment” practices known as the Law of Attraction, Positive Thinking, “the Secret,” and the Science of Getting Rich actually work. Weaving these ideas together into a concise, clear formula, with real-life examples of success, he reveals how your thoughts can impact reality and make things happen. In this “manual for miracles,” Horowitz explains how we each possess a creative agency to determine and reshape our lives. He shows how thinking in a directed, highly focused, and emotively charged manner expands our capacity to perceive and transform events and allows us to surpass ordinary boundaries of time and physical space. Building on Neville Goddard’s view that the human imagination is God the Creator and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s techniques for attaining personal power, he explores the highest uses of mind-power metaphysics and explains what works and what doesn’t, illuminating why and how events bend to our thoughts. He encourages readers to experiment and find themselves “at the helm of infinite possibilities.” Laying out a specific path to manifest your deepest desires, from wealth and love to happiness and security, Horowitz provides focused exercises and concrete tools for change and looks at ways to get more out of prayer, affirmation, and visualization. He also provides the first serious reconsideration of New Thought philosophy since the death of William James in 1910. He includes crucial insights and effective methods from the movement’s leaders such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Napoleon Hill, Neville Goddard, William James, Andrew Jackson Davis, Wallace D. Wattles, and many others. Defining a miracle as “circumstances or events that surpass all conventional or natural expectation,” the author invites you to join him in pursuing miracles and achieve power over your own life.

The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley,William D. Danko Summary

How do the rich get rich? An updated edition of the “remarkable” New York Times bestseller, based on two decades of research (The Washington Post). Most of the truly wealthy in the United States don’t live in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue. They live next door. America’s wealthy seldom get that way through an inheritance or an advanced degree. They bargain-shop for used cars, raise children who don’t realize how rich their families are, and reject a lifestyle of flashy exhibitionism and competitive spending. In fact, the glamorous people many of us think of as “rich” are actually a tiny minority of America’s truly wealthy citizens—and behave quite differently than the majority. At the time of its first publication, The Millionaire Next Door was a groundbreaking examination of America’s rich—exposing for the first time the seven common qualities that appear over and over among this exclusive demographic. This edition includes a new foreword by Dr. Thomas J. Stanley—updating the original content in the context of the financial crash and the twenty-first century. “Their surprising results reveal fundamental qualities of this group that are diametrically opposed to today’s earn-and-consume culture.” —Library Journal

The Transcendentalists and Their World by Robert A. Gross Summary

One of The Wall Street Journal's 10 best books of 2021 One of Air Mail's 10 best books of 2021 In the year of the nation’s bicentennial, Robert A. Gross published The Minutemen and Their World, a paradigm-shaping study of Concord, Massachusetts, during the American Revolution. It won the prestigious Bancroft Prize and became a perennial bestseller. Forty years later, in this highly anticipated work, Gross returns to Concord and explores the meaning of an equally crucial moment in the American story: the rise of Transcendentalism. The Transcendentalists and Their World offers a fresh view of the thinkers whose outsize impact on philosophy and literature would spread from tiny Concord to all corners of the earth. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the Alcotts called this New England town home, and Thoreau drew on its life extensively in his classic Walden. But Concord from the 1820s through the 1840s was no pastoral place fit for poets and philosophers. The Transcendentalists and their neighbors lived through a transformative epoch of American life. A place of two thousand–plus souls in the antebellum era, Concord was a community in ferment, whose small, ordered society founded by Puritans and defended by Minutemen was dramatically unsettled through the expansive forces of capitalism and democracy and tightly integrated into the wider world. These changes challenged a world of inherited institutions and involuntary associations with a new premium on autonomy and choice. They exposed people to cosmopolitan currents of thought and endowed them with unparalleled opportunities. They fostered uncertainties, raised new hopes, stirred dreams of perfection, and created an audience for new ideas of individual freedom and democratic equality deeply resonant today. The Transcendentalists and Their World is both an intimate journey into the life of a community and a searching cultural study of major American writers as they plumbed the depths of the universe for spiritual truths and surveyed the rapidly changing contours of their own neighborhoods. It shows us familiar figures in American literature alongside their neighbors at every level of the social order, and it reveals how this common life in Concord entered powerfully into their works. No American community of the nineteenth century has been recovered so richly and with so acute an awareness of its place in the larger American story.

Crystallizing Public Opinion (Original Classic Edition) by Edward Bernays Summary

A seminal work on how public opinion is created and shaped, Edward Bernays' 1923 classic Crystallizing Public Opinion set down the principles that corporations and government have used to influence public attitudes over the past century. With his view that the public behaves like herds of animals, Bernays outlines how to control the masses in whatever way the influencer chooses. With a glimpse into the world of propaganda and advertising, he shows how ideas as different as eating bacon for breakfast and preferring women to be thin were put into our heads. By adapting the ideas that Bernays put forth in this book, governments and advertisers have been able to “regiment the mind.” Bernays’ work explains a large part of the popularity of today’s TV news shout-fest and angry social media posts. Bernays wrote, “crowds love a contest.” This dynamic fuels the hostile and sarcastic comment chains that populate Twitter and Facebook and taps into what Bernays called “the ‘herd’ point of view,” which results in mass audiences, mass products and mass-media events. Bernays was named as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th Century by Life magazine. He counted among his clients the American Tobacco Company, several U.S. presidents and the opponents of the Guatemalan revolution.

Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion (Original Classic Edition) by Emile Coué Summary

Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion is an instruction manual in the ideas and methods of the early twentieth- century French psychologist Emile Coué. Shortly before his death in 1926, this self-taught therapist became an international sensation for his program of “conscious autosuggestion.” His method challenged the existing reliance on chemicals and clergy, causing quite a stir throughout the scientific and religious communities. In this volume, discover Coue’s method of how to: · Reprogram your psyche through the repetition of key mantras or affirmations · drastically improve health · Revamp your self-image · Feel a greater sense of well-being · Affirm daily in a simple mantra: “Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better” Critics mocked the simplicity of his program, but tens of thousands of followers in the United States and Europe swore that Coué had turned their lives around with methods that could be tried any time, and anywhere. This Original Classic Edition is a work of real and unique value. It includes an introduction by Mitch Horowitz, a PEN Award-winning historian and the author of books including The Miracle of a Definite Chief Aim, The Power of the Master Mind and The Miracle Club: How Thoughts Become Reality. The Washington Post says Mitch “treats esoteric ideas and movements with an even-handed intellectual studiousness that is too often lost in today’s raised-voice discussions.”

TENDER IS THE NIGHT (The Original 1934 Edition) by Francis Scott Fitzgerald Summary

This eBook edition of "Tender Is the Night" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Tender Is the Night is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In 1932, Fitzgerald's wife Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was hospitalized for schizophrenia in Baltimore, Maryland. The author rented the "la Paix" estate in the suburb of Towson to work on this book, the story of the rise and fall of Dick Diver, a promising young psychoanalyst and his wife, Nicole, who is also one of his patients. While working on the book he several times ran out of cash and had to borrow from his editor and agent, and write short stories for commercial magazines. The early 1930s, when Fitzgerald was conceiving and working on the book, were certainly the darkest years of his life, and accordingly, the novel has its bleak elements. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.
