The Sight of Sound by Richard Leppert Summary

Richard Leppert boldly examines the social meanings of music as these have been shaped not only by hearing but also by seeing music in performance. His purview is the northern European bourgeoisie, principally in England and the Low Countries, from 1600 to 1900. And his particular interest is the relation of music to the human body. He argues that musical practices, invariably linked to the body, are inseparable from the prevailing discourses of power, knowledge, identity, desire, and sexuality. With the support of 100 illustrations, Leppert addresses music and the production of racism, the hoarding of musical sound in a culture of scarcity, musical consumption and the policing of gender, the domestic piano and misogyny, music and male anxiety, and the social silencing of music. His unexpected yoking of musicology and art history, in particular his original insights into the relationships between music, visual representation, and the history of the body, make exciting reading for scholars, students, and all those interested in society and the arts.

The Person in the Sight of Sociology (RLE Social Theory) by Colin Fletcher Summary

Sociology is about society, but what about people? The person in the sight of sociology is all too often a matchstick being. In this original and stimulating book the person is characterized by what is inherent in a social being, and the result is a rich narrative, the story of the person told through events in life. The author holds that for sociological purposes, the person must be seen as perfect: perfectible, perfecting and perfect. He outlines the ‘trialectical’ nature of such a theory, offers a test of it in the making of madness and claims that such a change in vision is appropriate for the sociologist’s critical engagement in the world. It may be claimed that Colin Fletcher has created a new realm of theorizing and a piece of literature for sociology. And, perhaps as important, the reader may catch the rare experience of being spoken with as a person by another person.

The Guide to Paris With Kids (the Hotel, the Restaurant, the Sight, the Train, the Pool, the Coffee, the Toilets and the Rest) from Pearl Escapes 2011 by Pearl Howie Summary

I started writing these guides because I used to get extremely burned out in my old job and couldn't even handle finding and booking a hotel and flight or finding what to do when I did take time off (I could never have handled trying to plan a trip with the kids too!) So, I thought "wouldn't it be awesome if someone would write a guide that just gave you one perfect escape; the perfect hotel, spa, flight and restaurant." So that's what I did. I was lucky enough to live in Paris in my 20s and it's one of those cities that you can never "do", there is always more to experience. This is a very special guide as it was a trip I took with my two nieces (aged 11 and 12 at the time) and although we had a perfect escape it was daunting even trying to find an appropriate hotel for the three of us, and a little scary trying not to lose them, especially at night by the Eiffel Tower! I hope this guide helps you to give your kids an incredible Paris trip.

Sight Unseen by David Carroll Summary

A Note from David Caroll: My best friend got some terrible news when he was 13. After visiting the eye doctor, he was told he had Stargardt's disease; a rare eye condition that would leave him blind by the age of 18. At the time, my friend loved playing soccer, riding his bike, and jamming in a garage band. But as his vision deteriorated, he gave those hobbies up. He worried that he'd never get a girlfriend. He suffered depression, panic attacks, and eventually dropped out of school altogether. That was the first inspiration for Sight Unseen. The second one was Muriel Leeson's classic Oranges and UFO. I adored that book as a kid. I remember being captivated by Leeson's idea of a land where time didn't pass. When I put those two ideas together, I had the main plot of Sight Unseen. A 13-year-old boy (Finn) is losing his eyesight, and is understandably terrified of the future, but then he discovers a portal to Perpetuum-a place in the mountains where time stands still. There, Finn gets to be a 'normal' kid again-for as long as he wants. Perhaps even forever. Of course, magic always comes with a price, and Finn must eventually choose between his eyesight and his friends. Once he chooses, there's no going back.

Sight by Jessie Greengrass Summary

SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2018 'A dazzling obsessive entry in a burgeoning genre. Unusual and absorbing... the novel as a whole exudes a strange consoling power.' – The New Yorker 'Sight delves into a lot in under 200 pages: mothers and daughters, birth and death, loss and grief, finding one's balance, the ardor and arduousness of scientific discovery. Readers willing to give themselves over to Greengrass' penetrating vision will surely expand theirs.' – NPR 'With visceral, elegantly wrought truths of life and loss, this is an exciting companion to Sheila Heti's recent Motherhood (2018).' – Booklist In Jessie Greengrass' dazzlingly brilliant debut novel, our unnamed narrator recounts her progress to motherhood, while remembering the death of her own mother ten years before, and the childhood summers she spent with her psychoanalyst grandmother. Woven among these personal recollections are significant events in medical history: Wilhelm Rontgen’s discovery of the X-ray; Sigmund Freud’s development of psychoanalysis and the work that he did with his daughter, Anna; and the origins of modern surgery and the anatomy of pregnant bodies. Sight is a novel about being a parent and a child: what it is like to bring a person in to the world, and what it is to let one go. Exquisitely written and fiercely intelligent, it is an incisive exploration of how we see others, and how we might know ourselves.
