The Touch by , Summary

Not since The Thorn Birds has Colleen McCullough written a novel of such broad appeal about a family and the Australian experience as The Touch. At its center is Alexander Kinross, remembered as a young man in his native Scotland only as a shiftless boilermaker's apprentice and a godless rebel. But when, years later, he writes from Australia to summon his bride, his Scottish relatives quickly realize that he has made a fortune in the gold fields and is now a man to be reckoned with. Arriving in Sydney after a difficult voyage, the sixteen-year-old Elizabeth Drummond meets her husband-to-be and discovers to her dismay that he frightens and repels her. Offered no choice, she marries him and is whisked at once across a wild, uninhabited countryside to Alexander's own town, named Kinross after himself. In the crags above it lies the world's richest gold mine. Isolated in Alexander's great house, with no company save Chinese servants, Elizabeth finds that the intimacies of marriage do not prompt her husband to enlighten her about his past life -- or even his present one. She has no idea that he still has a mistress, the sensual, tough, outspoken Ruby Costevan, whom Alexander has established in his town, nor that he has also made Ruby a partner in his company, rapidly expanding its interests far beyond gold. Ruby has a son, Lee, whose father is the head of the beleaguered Chinese community; the boy becomes dear to Alexander, who fosters his education as a gentleman. Captured by the very different natures of Elizabeth and Ruby, Alexander resolves to have both of them. Why should he not? He has the fabled "Midas Touch" -- a combination of curiosity, boldness and intelligence that he applies to every situation, and which fails him only when it comes to these two women. Although Ruby loves Alexander desperately, Elizabeth does not. Elizabeth bears him two daughters: the brilliant Nell, so much like her father; and the beautiful, haunting Anna, who is to present her father with a torment out of which for once he cannot buy his way. Thwarted in his desire for a son, Alexander turns to Ruby's boy as a possible heir to his empire, unaware that by keeping Lee with him, he is courting disaster. The stories of the lives of Alexander, Elizabeth and Ruby are intermingled with those of a rich cast of characters, and, after many twists and turns, come to a stunning and shocking climax. Like The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough's new novel is at once a love story and a family saga, replete with tragedy, pathos, history and passion. As few other novelists can, she conveys a sense of place: the desperate need of her characters, men and women, rootless in a strange land, to create new beginnings.

The Touch by Cliff Azaria Summary

James Hoover is a bright young journalist who writes for a respected science magazine. A promising career lies before him, and his wife Betty loves him very much and helps him in everything. Moreover, she accepts an oddity of James that he had shared only with her and a close trusted friend: sometimes, unexpectedly, he is tormented by a terrifying vision: sections of the walls of the building he is in start undulating and moving towards him. The vision is always accompanied by an acute feeling of terror. James can’t find any rational explanation for this strange phenomenon. Everything begins to change the moment James is sent by the magazine’s editor-in-chief to a scientific conference organized in a city in Switzerland. There he has the pleasant surprise of meeting an old university friend, without suspecting for a second that this apparently accidental meeting is part of a bizarre plan conceived by Nala and Harisha, two people who live in an isolated palace, somewhere in a remote secluded part of the world. In a different corner of the world, a doctor desperately tries to persuade his son to give up drugs, but without success. Later, when he finds out that his son has been murdered in a fire exchange between the police and some drug dealers, the doctor falls into an inexplicable coma. His desperate wife doesn’t yet understand that even this coma is part of the plan of the two people: Nala şi Harisha… James focuses on the events at the Swiss conference, not yet realizing that the presented topics will help him later to understand the terrible hallucinations with the walls that move. He will also finally and painfully understand what Nala and Harisha want from him…

The Touch by Adan Berkowitz Summary

Jessica Kolb can kill people with her mind. She's only done it once, to her brother--an accident, but that doesn't assuage the guilt. She's kept her dark secret hidden, not that anyone would believe her, anyway. But when she discovers someone with the same ability in her small Wisconsin town, she's desperate to know more. Maybe she can finally learn why she's been given this sinister power. That someone is Claude Weissman, a popular local doctor. Jessica's got a million questions, but talking to him yields no answers, only a deep revulsion that sends her running to throw up. Digging into Weissman's past, Jessica confirms her gut was right: Weissman's a murderer, a conman who fleeces his patients before killing them with his Touch. While investigating, Jessica befriends the vengeful father of a girl killed by Weissman, and decides to help expose the not-so-good doctor for the monster he is. But their plan is complicated by the arrival of Freyja, a hedonistic wanderer who also possesses the Touch. Freyja might hold the clues to why the trio has been drawn together, but her presence is a distraction Jessica doesn't need, especially with Weissman lurking in wait. Cunning, sadistic, and able to kill without a trace, Weissman is a terrifying foe. She'll need the Touch to beat him, but she'll need uncommon strength to resist its seductive power.

The Touch Taboo in Psychotherapy and Everyday Life by Tamar Swade Summary

Touch has been a taboo in mainstream Western talking therapies since their inception. This book examines the effects on us of touch, and of touch deprivation – what we feel when we are touched, what it means to us, and the fact that some individuals and cultures are more tactile than others. The author traces the development and perpetuation of the touch taboo, puts forward counterarguments to it, outlines criteria for the safe and effective use of touch in therapy, and suggests ways of dismantling the touch taboo should we wish to do so. Through moving interviews with clients who have experienced life-changing benefits of physical contact at the hands of their therapists, the place of touch in therapy practice is re-evaluated and the therapy profession urged to re-examine its attitudes towards this important therapeutic tool. This book will be essential reading for therapists, counsellors, social workers, educators, health professionals and for any general reader interested in the crucial issue of touch in everyday life.

The Stranger, the Tears, the Photograph, the Touch by William A. Christian Jr. Summary

This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina García Rodero, are included.

Sacred to the Touch by Thomas A. DuBois Summary

With near-mythical forests of birch and pine, the Nordic and Baltic countries boast a rich tradition of religious wood carving that is in many ways emblematic of their cultures. Sacred to the Touch examines the spiritual and intellectual projects of six twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists who have adapted and revitalized this tradition. Through interviews and analyses, folklorist Thomas A. DuBois explores the notions of continuity with the past that these artists seek to express through their art, examining the forest church of late Finnish artist Eva Ryynnen, the carvings of Norwegian Americans Phillip Odden and Else Bigton that decorate a planned replica of a stave church in Southern California, the medieval Catholic-rooted work of Lutheran Sister Lydia Mariadotter (Swedish), the grave markers and roadside figures of Algimantas Sakalauskas (Lithuanian), and the merging of Lutheran and pre-Christian traditions by Lars Levi Sunna (Smi). With color photographs and detailed descriptions, Sacred to the Touch reveals the interplay of tradition with personal and communal identity that characterize modern religious carving in Northern Europe.
